TD60 Posted 1 May , 2006 Share Posted 1 May , 2006 Hello I have just discovered the my great grand father was a captain in the 11th hussards (french). I am trying to identify where he fought. I have some tracks, some details now but I have several holes in his unit history. You may help me because on several times they fought very close to british units. The first "hole" is around Otober the 31, 1914. After three weeks of fights: Hazebrouck, Doulieu, Sailly sur la Lys Staden, Roulers, Paeschendale, Langemarck, Merkem, etc ... part of his division is placed South of Ypres at the request of Sir J.French. What happened there to the unit I do not know . No idea, no clue It would be nice if somebody, any 'expert' of Ypres 1, knows something about this. Maybe a map exists with unit places, or other details. The unit is 11ème hussards, from 6ème Brigade Légère (BL), 6ème Division de Cavalerie (DC). They were joined with the 13ème chasseurs. I remember there were long ago some graves of french cavalrymen in Dikkebush. Could be some of them ? Many thanks in advance.
brindlerp Posted 1 May , 2006 Share Posted 1 May , 2006 Bonjour From page 274, Messines and Wytschate: "The French now officially took over from us the line from Messines on the south to the canal on the north. It is interesting to note that, between October 27th and November 11th, some 200,000 French infantry, twenty regiments of cavalry and sixty pieces of heavy artillery reached Ypres, Poperinghe, and Bailleul." brindlerp Posted 1 May , 2006 Share Posted 1 May , 2006 A remarkable account of the First Battle Of Ypres covering three chapters, 89 pages including maps, is given in THE SEVENTH DIVISION, 1914 - 1918, by C.T. Atkinson published by http://www.naval-military-press.com Mention is made of French forces in the battle, but not individual units. Attached: from page 107 - Map 8 - Operations October 31st - November 6th Further information including Official History maps can be found: Regards Richard

Same date, same name, same place and french and english units 'mixed' ! Kind regards
CROONAERT Posted 3 May , 2006 Share Posted 3 May , 2006 . Any idea ? On that particular thread, that brigade is British. Here is the map from the same source showing the situation on Oct 31st 1914. You can see the dispositions of the 3 brigades of the (French) 6th Cav.Div on this map (2 at Frezenberg, 1 at Hooge). (British units are in red, French are in blue, German are in green). Hope this helps, Dave.

By chance do you have some more details about actions they participated at or map of the next days. Remark: Should it be possible to include this map on a webpage I am preparing on this unit ??? TD60 Posted 5 May , 2006 Author Share Posted 5 May , 2006 (...though I note that one of the Brigades is no longer there - just 1 at the front and 1 at Frezenberg now) Croonaert you are absolutly right ! On nov the 2nd one of the brigade fought hardly and had many loss. (the 6th dragoons brigade) It is this brigade who left around the 6th the 2 others were there until the 16th. Many thanks again for all those details which give a clear view of their place during the first battle of ypres. Just for information this division was fighting around Hazebouck on October the 9th to cover the arrival of the british battalions, then they were at Roulers ! on the 19th an close to ypres on the 31st.
