Following on from the 'Black soldiers' thread, Pals might be interested in a forthcoming dramatisation of the life of Walter Tull on BBC Radio 4 next week. Here is the press release:

Paterson Joseph, Peter de Jersey and Trevor Fox star in a drama about one man's real-life battle against racism in the world of football, in The Afternoon Play: Tull (Tuesday 7 October, 2.15pm) by Andy Merriman.

Walter Tull was one of the first black professional footballers in Britain and also the first black officer to be commissioned as a combat officer in the First World War.

Tull showed extraordinary courage in the face of violent racism both on the football pitch and in the barracks and was recognised and rewarded for his contribution to football and his outstanding leadership qualities in the army.

A memorial to him outside Northampton Town's football ground, unveiled in 1998, places him in the centre of the fight to kick racism out of the sport.

With the cooperation of his descendants, writer Andrew Merriman and the historian Rod Wickens have accessed letters and other documents to create a rich and revealing insight into Walter Tull and his story.

Thanks for this.

I am doing some work this afternoon with our local heads of history on Walter Tull. I was suprised how many web sites could be found on him (although many repeat the same information!)

As this is Black History Month it is good to especially remember all those of African and Asian heritage from Britain and overseas that gave their lives in the Great War.
