Andrew Hesketh Posted 23 March , 2007 Author Share Posted 23 March , 2007 Ian - welcome to the forum and thank you for your information. I have William in my database but unfortunately nothing more than you provide. As to his enlistment date, the number suggests between November 1915 and January 1916. Chris Caul Posted 3 April , 2007 Share Posted 3 April , 2007 he also has one of 'those' 2**** numbers Mike, whats the significance of the 2**** numbers? Chris
mikebriggs Posted 3 April , 2007 Share Posted 3 April , 2007 Hi Chris They are actually quite an intersting series of numbers that the Sherwood Foresters seemed to have used to move men around different Battalions of the Regiment. Perhaps between the TF Battns or from the TF Battns to Regular/Service Battns (or visa versa etc). I don't think we really know for sure yet. Normally you would expect only 1 man to have the 20507 number, but in fact there are four men (perhaps more but not listed with an MIC) Edward Winfield Frank Haywood William Fulwood William Bates The 2**** series seem to pop up from late 1916 onwards (ie after the Military Service Act, which I think is significant) For example, I have a series of 44 6th Battn men that have the 6-digit 1917 renumbering (ie from 242595 to 242639), but what makes these men interesting is:- 1) They are numbered alphabetically 2) Most had a pre-1917 4-digit number 3) The all have a 2**** number (ie from 20000 to 20044) 4) Most have served overseas with other Battns of the Sherwood Foresters 5) These were the last 6-digit numbers issued to the 6th Battn 6) They arrived after Jan 1917 So what I think happened is that at some time in late 1916 early 1917 groups of men were collected (perhaps at the Base Depots) and given these "20000" numbers prior to being transferred onto another Battalion. Why it was done I don't know....................... Perhaps I'll know tomorrow..........
hzibell Posted 5 April , 2007 Share Posted 5 April , 2007 Andrew, I have my great uncle William James Munson. Details are: William James Munson Notts & Derbyshire 9953 Enlisted date I think is around Jan 1906 but not sure. MIC also states M/38674 RASC. May have been injuried in France and reassigned. Born in 1889 and survived the war died in 1979. I'm waiting for his service record from Glasgow. I can let you know when I get it. Heather
Andrew Hesketh Posted 5 April , 2007 Author Share Posted 5 April , 2007 Thank you Heather. January 1906 fits into the grand scheme of things very nicely (9976 was 5th of January, so I imagine your chap was probably queuing on the 2nd of January - I hope it wasn't the result of over-exuberant new year celebrations!). If you do get the service record I would be interested to know his battalion. I would suspect the 2nd.

Andrew Hesketh Posted 6 April , 2007 Author Share Posted 6 April , 2007 1. The "7th (Reserve) 8th The Sherwood Foresters " is rubber stamped. 2. Size 7 boots ?, or does 7 Boots means something else? Kevin, Many thanks. 1. I'm not too sure what this is referring to. The 3/7th and 3/8th reserve battalions were seperate until merging some time in late 1916. 2. 7 legs? kevinrowlinson Posted 6 April , 2007 Share Posted 6 April , 2007 The "8th" on enlarging must be "Bttn". Makes more sense. I like the 7 legs theory. Kevin
