Michael Posted 20 April , 2006 Share Posted 20 April , 2006 Five men of the 4th Buffs died on 4th May 1917. They all have the following in their supplementary information; "Lost in HMT Transylvania". One of the men (CA Potter) has no other information so I assume that the FVF was not returned. Would it be correct to assume that the "Lost in HMT Transylvania" detail would have been supplied by the War Office for all of the men. This is how the data was presented by the CWGC. Lost in H.M.T. Transylvania 4th May 1917. Age 33. Son of John and Esther Poole, of St. John's Green, Writtle, Chelmsford POTTER, Private, CHARLES ALBERT, T/202484. 4th Bn. There are a number of entries such as "Drowned at Sea (from HT xxxx)" all with the same format and I've always wondered where the info came from. historydavid Posted 21 April , 2006 Share Posted 21 April , 2006 The SS Transylvania, defensively armed, built 1914, 14,315 grt, was torpedoed on 4th May 1917 by the German U-boat U63 2½ miles S from Cape Vado, Gulf of Genoa, Italy, Mediterranean Sea, She was carrying Government stores and troops from Marseilles to Alexandria, and was owned by Anchor Line (Henderson Brothers) Ltd of Glasgow.
