Five men of the 4th Buffs died on 4th May 1917. They all have the following in their supplementary information; "Lost in HMT Transylvania".

One of the men (CA Potter) has no other information so I assume that the FVF was not returned. Would it be correct to assume that the "Lost in HMT Transylvania" detail would have been supplied by the War Office for all of the men.

This is how the data was presented by the CWGC.

With men lost aboard ship the additional info about the ships and their demise came from official sources - Admiralty, War Office, Department of Trade and their equivalents in the Dominions.

Thanks Terry. I knew it wouldn't take you long to answer.

There are a number of entries such as "Drowned at Sea (from HT xxxx)" all with the same format and I've always wondered where the info came from. It was too coincidental to be coming from the NOK
