Hedley Malloch Posted 19 September , 2003 Share Posted 19 September , 2003 A First World War British Livens phosgene type gas shell was found mid-morning today in Meteren today during the construction of a new pavement in a busy area of town. It was turned up by an excavator. There is nothing unusual about this type of discovery, but unfortunately the shell leaked when it was disturbed and a dozen people were taken to hospitals in the area after inhaling the gas. All were allowed to go home after examination. The incident launched a full scale alert with police, health and fire services on hand, houses and businesses evacuated and roads closed. A bomb disposal squad and defused the bomb at 17h30
gem22 Posted 20 September , 2003 Share Posted 20 September , 2003 Talk about a close thing. I was in Meteren on Wednesday afternoon visiting the various cemeteries? Phew! Garth
Michael Posted 22 September , 2003 Share Posted 22 September , 2003 I know this one was probably damaged by construction, but chatting to Charlotte yesterday, she says that incidents of people getting injured by unexploded ordnance (farmers - not people taking them apart) is on the increase. This indicates that the explosive is becoming more and more unstable. Its a terrible legacy that we've left them with but I'm not sure what the solution is.
