JulianB Posted 19 September , 2003 Share Posted 19 September , 2003 Fantastic amount of information here but I'm a bit confused about renumbering of Armies, also nothing on content / make up of Armies & Corps. I'm trying to find out which Corps the 41 Div was in , either X or XIV ???, & therefore which Army. Can anyone help. Thanks.
Chris_Baker Posted 19 September , 2003 Share Posted 19 September , 2003 Hello JulianB I've actually shied away from building up the Order of Battle at the Army/Corps level, while I continue adding detail at a lower level. One of the problems with it is that while a Division was a relatively static formation in terms of the units under its command, Corps and Divisions were not. Divisions moved between Corps quite frequently. This was largely due to the fact that whereas a Division was moved to whichever area it was required, a Corps was more or less anchored to a geographical sector, at least on the Western Front. 41st Division was under command of XV Corps in September-October 1916 on the Somme, X Corps in June 1917 for Messines operations and again in late July through to September for Third Ypres. It moved briefly to Italy and on return to France in February 1918 came into Third Army area. It served under IV Corps in March 1918 then to Second Army under VIII Corps in April although it went to II Corps during that month. It was in XIX Corps by September 1918. Finally, this page explains the Army renumbering, etc.
