andigger Posted 10 March , 2006 Share Posted 10 March , 2006 This seems odd... weren't the Portugese fighting on the Western Front at least as early as Spring 1915? Andy
Greenwoodman Posted 10 March , 2006 Share Posted 10 March , 2006 The first units left Lisbon in January 1917. Following training 1st Portuguese Brigade took over the Neuve Chappelle sector on 30/05/17. Portuguese troops were skirmishing in Africa as early as October 1914. Michael Lowrey Posted 11 March , 2006 Share Posted 11 March , 2006 ... And a German U-boat first mined Portugese waters on April 17, 1916 (the submarine was en route to the Mediterranean). Actually, the Kaiserliche Marine made a point of occassionally sending a submarine to patrol off Portugal throughout the war. Kind of a "we haven't forgotten about you" statement. Best wishes, Michael
