garyem1 Posted 13 September , 2003 Posted 13 September , 2003 Starting next week, saturday 20/9/03 channel 4 at 7pm. a new series on WW1.
john w. Posted 13 September , 2003 Posted 13 September , 2003 Is that the series letters from the edge? John
shinglma Posted 14 September , 2003 Posted 14 September , 2003 Its a "fresh evaluation" by Hew Strachan. See Channel Four's website by clicking here
Guest lesley Posted 14 September , 2003 Posted 14 September , 2003 John - yes it is. The Mail magazine yesterday carried excerpts from some of the letters taken from A War in Words by Svetlana Palmer and Sarah Wallis. regards Lesley
Mark Hone Posted 14 September , 2003 Posted 14 September , 2003 It's the Professor Hew Strachan series I mentioned in an earlier thread. It is based on his magisterial multi-volume history, which is appearing gradually. (Maybe he's subbing his research costs with the Channel 4 fees.) The showing seems to have been delayed a little. It will still finish before BBC2's re-run of 'Great War'...
john w. Posted 14 September , 2003 Posted 14 September , 2003 Lesley do you have any more info on the two authors... want to see how it is presented, John
Mark Hone Posted 16 September , 2003 Posted 16 September , 2003 John-the Channel 4 series next Saturday is a 'straightforward' history of the war by Professor Hew Strachan, not the series you mention. Is that also due for showing in the near future?
john w. Posted 16 September , 2003 Posted 16 September , 2003 Mark I dont know... it was in the Mail weekend mag last sat... says it is due to be screened later... was wondering what the format would be like.... have an idea and want to see their version first. John
brownag Posted 17 September , 2003 Posted 17 September , 2003 Its nice to see that BBC2 and Channel 4 have decided to screen their Great War programmes at the same time. Isn't the 7.00pm slot on Saturday night the time for programmes they don't expect to get a lot of viewers for?
Guest Simon Bull Posted 17 September , 2003 Posted 17 September , 2003 There would be a clash, except that this Saturday (ie 20/9) the BBC (still messing around) have moved "The Great War" to 1645. I shall post this as a separate message too to alert Pals. Simon Bull
Mark Hone Posted 17 September , 2003 Posted 17 September , 2003 The rumour is that with a new controller eager to make his mark the Channel 4 'History Boom' may be coming to an end. Make the most of it while you can...
