Can anyone point me to some good information on how the APC worked in WW1. My interest lies in a silver war badge I picked up a while back and have tracked back the number to a Pte in the APC who was discharged as a result of being wounded!

Any pointers welcome.

This post has no relevence to your question, but I thought it might be interesting. I have a fascinating and very informative little book, published in 1910 about the organisation of the British Army. Under the heading The Army Pay Department and Corps, the author, Captain J Atkinson, can offer no definite information due to the reorganisation of the Corps. He does go on to say however, "The Corps has no proper crest or motto, though unkind critics have suggested such ones as a bag of shekels with the letters L.S.D or I.O.U. Perhaps your Private was a victim of friendly fire given that this Corps appears to be held in such esteem.

There is a history of the Corps: Trust and be Trusted - The Royal Army Pay Corps and its Origins, LG Hinchcliffe, 1983. Don't know about its WW1 content though.

Thanks guys.

Terry - The man concerned had previously been in the Manchester Regt - I have yet to check whether he served overseas with them. However from the rolls it looks like men who were wounded or re-categorised not A1 were assigned to the APC. I suppose they were assigned to carry money around with an escort. The mind boggles at the possibilities!

Ian - I had a look to see if there was ever an APC clerk at battalion or brigade levels - WFA fact sheets and ST articles. No sign so far. If wounded with the APC it would be worth knowing at what level of formation they got to. Unless of course his wound was acquired with the Manchesters.

My guess is that your man was injured in a collision between two lorry loads of paperclips arriving at GHQ.

Ian, did you get any further with these researches. I have exactly, well almost, the same puzzle. I have amedal card of a chap who was with the Glouc Regt, then got his Silver War Badge with the RAPC. Leastways I think so. The medal card says SWB List, then adds in red below 'deleted from RAPC, and 'on list L/655'. So I'm not sure what that means.

Mr Bowbrick left this forum quite sometime ago. He will not be making a reappearance.
