Eyresfamily Posted 4 October , 2012 Share Posted 4 October , 2012 Good Evening SadSAc and Darren, Thank you both very much for your messages and it is particularly poignant as it is 94yrs today that the L10 was lost at sea.We will certainly send for his military records as suggested & I have also learnt that there is some information at the Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire, UK. I will work out how to upload a copy of the photograph, but my sincere apologies in advance if the photo was taken whilst he was assigned to another vessel other than the L10. Signals Posted 4 October , 2012 Share Posted 4 October , 2012 Hi Eyresfamily, ok, yes i too have this photo, all these men are E19 except for the man in the back row on our far left who is E1. You can see as i have written Eyres has been awarded the Cross while his other E19 crewmen have not, this photo would be around November 1915 on board the Russian Depot Ship Dvina at Reval in Estonia. The boys are all wearing HMS Maidstone Tallys. In the back row on our far right is a chap named Claude Fry, he was later serving in M1 and drowned after fallling into the water while getting back on board when M1 was in Istanbul just after Turkey surrended, (family have told me they were told he was a touch tipsy). In September 1915 when E19 was stuck in Newcastle prior to leaving for the Baltic, Eyres was having his proverbials busted by a very pushy Lt Cdr Cromie to have repairs completed ASAP, and it was noted by one of E19's crewmen that Eyres was giving it straight back to Cromie in what was deemed his very high pitched voice. He was on L10 Maidstone from 1 July 1918 until 4 October 1918. I have a copy of his service history and a copy of a letter written by him dated 30 August 1918 in which he referred to "his wife and child". Below is the copy of the service record In the letter I referred to, Martin referred to "taking a run out" which I presume means coming out on a ship to New Zealand to visit his sister who had settled here. Attached is the letter I referred to earlier, Martin commenced service on L10 on 1st July 1918. The letter was written 30th August 1918 and found its way to Martins nephew, John Meehan in New Zealand. L10 was lost 5 weeks after the letter was written and the war was over less than 6 weeks after that. We have no photos if him, it would mean so much to our family if we could put a face to this man as our town is taking part in the memorial celebrations of the Great War. tippypop Posted 14 May , 2015 Share Posted 14 May , 2015 I don't know if this would be of any interest however my Great Great Uncle was Cyril Hughes, who is listed on the L10 crew list of the men lost in action. We have a photo of him in uniform and he also commissioned a model of the L10 (not the most engineered piece but none the less to us a great piece of history) for his Irish Girlfriend, whom upon hearing of his passing very kindly sent the model back to his Mother. Sadly we know nothing more about his girlfriend other than her wonderful kind act meant a lot to his Mother and other family members. We now have the model in pride of place in our home along with his photo. If you would like a picture of this I would be happy to take one and add it to this thread, If anyone has any further information of his career in the Navy it would also be appreciated.
