The following website http://www.lib.byu.edu/~rdh/wwi/memoir/Fri...France/ff01.htm

comprises a photograph depicting a windmill and an ambulance.

According to the text the photograph could be taken in the area Ypres-Poperinghe.

Can a member give the exact location ?

Hello Gilbert,

Did you check the book about windmills by Verpaalen (or Verpalen)?

To Jan,

I did check the book(s) of John Verpaalen. Other books too. No book that I have, gives an answer.

Kind regards,

Maybe the windmill is in Northern France?

I would not think that this windmill would be in the Ypres-Pop area being that it is mostly intact. My guess would also be northern France, since that is also where most (thought not all) of the American troops were.

Gilbert

What a great site. Thanks for drawing our attention to it.

PS

I agree, doubt your photo was taken in the Salient.

I can't locate it, but would like to point out that that syle of windmill is much more typical of Belgium or the Netherlands than Northern France. Not to say it couldn't have been in France, but I would look more northerly first. Doc2

It could be a windmill that lies on the top of a hill to the south of the road from Rheims to Berry au Bac.
