Hi Sadsac, and thanks for your reply. I'm looking to determine the identity of an officer who was serving aboard HMS Queen Mary in late 1913, by the name of Fox, initials F.M. This man was not aboard at the time of loss, but I thought he should show up in the 1917 list.

JESSIE, Find here a F.M. FOX - do not know if he is `your' fellow.

Perhaps after serving HMS Q.MARY as you write he transferred to RNAS.

In fact as Q.MARY had a LAUNCH & RECOVER plane he may have served in that capacity ???

This may explain him NOT being in the 1915 Navy List !! ??

So is Fred M your chap ?? IF he went RNAS he MAY later be in RAF - so bags you go to their lists.

Worth a try - what !!! IF so you may get more info in GWF `Fly Section'.

FOX Frederick M N/E Flt.Lt. RNAS 85T119 N/E

C-in-C Nore 20.07.17 Gazetted

R.N.A.S. Officers - 13.06.17 Mentioned in Despatches

Showed considerable pluck in single-handed, attacking a hostile formation of 15 or 16 aeroplanes on the 13th June, 1917.

For LOG of Q. Mary go to PRO file ADM 53 / ????

ADM 53 / 56876 for 040913 to 311214

LOG of ahips are for navigation purposes, but now & again include further info - such as Lt. ??????? joined ship !!

Best o luck, Sadsac

Jesse have you looked at his service records?

At the moment there seems to be a glitch with the full UK National archives catalogue, but here's one to start with:

AIR 76/168 RAF Officers' Service Records

Did you know that RN Officer's Service Records are online?

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...amp;queryType=1

Hey,

Thanks for the tip, but already checked there, and I am 0 for 3 re: the National Archives. Some stuff on Blaikie, but primarily relating to his capture and not much biographical info otherwise.

Thanks,

-Daniel

Thank you all for your kind assistance. I guess I probably really need to get the ship's monthly officer rosters, and possibly portions of the deck logs and muster rolls to determine the identity of this and other officers aboard. I've gone about this many times with US ships, but never with the UK, other than some crew listings on Ancestry. I don't recall ever seeing references on here to anyone obtaining rolls and logs, which I assume would come from the Archives. Are they obtainable by mail?

ARABIS - well done on `follow-on' !!!

WESLEY, find here award to S/Lt CUST ;

CUST Arthur J.P Killed in Action S/Lt. RN 78A060

Strongbow C-in-C Grand Fleet 07.08.18 Gazetted

Action with enemy Light Cruisers 17.10.17 Mentioned in Despatches

Gallantly performing his duty while in action against superior enemy forces.

He was killed during the engagement.

The Court Martial held that, the conduct of the Captain, officers and crew was worthy of the best traditions of the Naval Service.

Their Lordships' high appreciation expressed of his conduct on this occasion.

Ignore `Court Martial' part - that alludes to when a HMS ship is sunk the Captain is ALWAYS C.M'd for her loss - in this instance `Sword pointed Away' !!
