He was, Citation for Bar to MC was Gazetted 2nd December 1918.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He continually attended wounded under heavy fire, and enabled them to be brought in and evacuated with great despatch. Though his haversack containing (dressings was swept away by shell fire, he returned for more dressings and went out again. His cheerfulness, pluck, and determination were a fine example to all.

(M.C. gazetted 16th August, 1917.)

I am the editor of the war-time letters of the Revd Sameul Frederick Leighton Green, who was awarded the MC twice. I have not been able to find a full citation for his first MC in the LG, but the occasion for which his bar was awarded is given in the LG: 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Sebourquiaux on 4th November 1918. During the advance he attended to the wounded, frequently under fire. He went forward and stayed for over an hour with a badly wounded signaller lying out in the open under shell fire, until the stretcher-bearers could fetch him away.' [LG 9/12/1919] After a spell at a Casualty Clearing Station's resident CofE chaplain in 1916, the Revd S F L Green was appointed chaplain to the 1/4th Battalion, London Regiment, with whom he remained until the battalion was disbanded early in 1919.

Revd Green's M.C. was a New Year's Honour (1919). Very, very few of these awards had citations published.

The Rev. J. Carden, MC was also awarded the CBE, Portuguese Order of Christ (Commander) and was MID.

It is believed that his combination of awards is unique.

Totally irrelevent, but naval chaplain Rev Charles Peshall won the DSO at Zeebrugge. He died in 1957.

I remember that Spinks had a sale @ 2003 (the titanic sale), almost exclusively to chaplains. The catalogue is a goldmine of information.

The Spinks catalogue has a few: Do you mean Chaplains who won the MC as chaplains-or officers who were later ordained?

One notable one is to Rev. Charles Stanley Fleet (lot 607) which was won in the balkans. M.C. London gazette, 1919-Mentioned in dispatches for services with the british forces in salonika in october 1918. etc."

Father Bouchier's MC group (mentioned above) was lot # 604 and estimated at a paltry 380 pounds.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When several casualties were caused by shell fire on a road, he at once assisted in removing the wounded and dressing their wounds. Whilst he was doing so a further burst of shelling wounded two more men, and by his promptness in dealing with the situation he prevented further casualties. He saved at least one life, and showed splendid devotion to duty and self-sacrifice.

The Rev W R Paterson was a minister at Armadale United Free Church for 12 years before accepting a commission as Army Chaplain to the Scots Greys, with who he had served as Chaplain during the South African War (see picture above), his first station being at the Curragh Camp, Ireland.

An earnest worker, Mr Paterson held strong views on the South African War, and when he volunteered his services as Chaplain, one of the greatest demonstrations ever seen in Armadale or given to a single man in the history of the town, was witnessed on the evening he left to embark for South Africa. He was conveyed to the Station by practically the whole of the townspeople, headed by the brass band. He made a stirring speech to the crowd at the station that raised their greatest enthusiasm. When the train moved off, the surging mass of people that surrounded the train to cheer Mr Paterson off was so great that the guard was unable to get into his van, and the train went off without him.

Rev Paterson carried the first message from Field Marshall Lord Roberts into Pretoria, and during the Great War he was mentioned twice in dispatches.

Michael Moynihan's book "God on our Side, The British Padre in World War I" published in 1983 by Leo Cooper, ISBN number 0-436-29402-8. The book is based on the diaries and letter of six padres (five Anglican and one Roman Catholic) held by the Imperial War Museum.

Biographies include Rev. David Railton MC, Rev Victor Tanner, MC & Bar, Father William Doyle, MC and Rev. Harold Spooner MC, who was captured when the garrison of Kut surrendered to the Turks.

Hi All,

My Great Uncle appears on the list under Baptist. He was Rev Abraham Rees Morgan from Tirdeunaw, Swansea. He received his gong from the Duke of Connaught whilst in Jerusalem.

Post war he left for America and had a ministry in Allentown PA. He died there in the early 1950s.
