I hope this is the correct part of the forum for this question apologys if it is not.

I am looking at booking my two weeks hoilidays in September and would like to travel to the Gallipoli Hellas region, this would be on our own not with a tour company.

If this proves too dificult we would love to try Salonika in particular to visit the Doiran Military Cemetery.

Has any body got any suggestions please for this trip.

Thank you Taddy

if you have taken it into your head to visit the gallioli peninsula, you will need a car. tis perfectly possible to travel to gallipoli by public transport, but once you get there, you get stuck : civilisation ends about 10 miles from anzac, 15 miles from helles and 20 from suvla.there is a sealed road, but nothing else.

all main rent-a-car companies have an office at the airport (ataturk airport) and when you book your car in advance, you'll be on your way in 10 minutes. even if you arrive by night flight, collecting your vehicle is no problem. booking in advance from your home country (phone) and paying with visa at the airport is the cheapest procedure. yer best bet might be Europcar or Budget car : their vehicles are usually new and reasonably priced expect something like 30 USD / day for a mid-sized one with airco on board.

You can fly into Istanbul and drive from there or take a long distance coach to Eceabat or Canakkale and you are there. An alternative route is to use some of the holiday season flights into Izmir and pick up a vehicle there.

As for Salonika, you can fly to salonika (Thessaloniki) and go from there though accomodation and food is not always straightforward to source. There are several seasoned Salonika travellers on the firum (eg Alan Wakefiled). I just hope to get there one day.

Hi Taddy,

Tuna is right about getting around the Gallipoli Peninsula, it is difficult without wheels of your own. You can arrange to have a local taxi pick you up and drop you where you want to go if you wish to get to areas away from where you are staying, though this can be expensive. There is a very good driver in Eceabat, Anil Dinc, who speaks English and knows the Peninsula very well. This can work for day trips if you are based in one spot.

If, as you said in your message, your main interest is Helles, another option is to take a bus from Istanbul or Izmir to Eceabat and then take one of the regular minibuses to the village of Kilitbahir, some four kilometres from Eceabat. From there you can get a somewhat irregular minibus to Seddulbahir, the village at the toe of the Peninsula. In the warmer months these operate a bit more frequently but usually only run when filled, so there can be a wait. As long as you are happy to be based at Helles and get around on foot, this is a cheap option, though it does make getting to the other sectors difficult.

There are a couple of nice pensions at Seddulbahir, by far the best being the Panorama. In September, there are a couple of good eateries and a small market, enough for most needs.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Bill
