Dolphin Posted 10 October , 2010 Share Posted 10 October , 2010 Those Nieuports may have been Siemens D1s - a very close copy mainly used on the EF or for training but some did reach the WF. Small numbers of the Siemens-Schuckert D.I were used by Jastas 1 - 5, 7, 9, 11 and 14 on the Western Front. However, as confirmed in Adrian's post, the Nieuports in question were ex-French Nieuports. Ltn Gustav Leffers of Jasta 1 flew a Nieuport 16, while Oblt Kurt Student of AOK 3 flew Nieuport 11 No 1324. Gareth

Dolphin Posted 10 October , 2010 Share Posted 10 October , 2010 Cnock Thanks for posting the fascinating photos. The Pup looks like A6194 of No 66 Sqn, flown by Capt L H Smith when it was captured on 24 May 1917. Do you have any information on when or where the Camel was captured? Cheers Gareth

centurion Posted 10 October , 2010 Share Posted 10 October , 2010 Can someone with better eyesight than me (these days quite a few) confirm if there is a small v shaped bracket on one of the rear centre section struts?. If so its probably the observer's Lewis gun mount introduced by Louis Strange which would in turn suggest no 5 sqn.
