Guest Olivier G Posted 31 August , 2003 Posted 31 August , 2003 Hi everybody, Writing you from Nice, French Riviera, I saw this morning the grave of Commander G. D. Jephson from the HMS Dartmouth. He died on february 7th (or 1st) 1916. I'd like to have (if possible) more information about him and HMS Dartmouth. Many thanks, Olivier G

Arthur Posted 31 August , 2003 Posted 31 August , 2003 Oliver, Apart from the information that you have received from Malcolm I can add very little. The initials G D = George Douglas. A torpedo attack was made on her on the 15th May 1917 by UC 25. I have no information on the damage that was caused from this attack. Arthur
Neil Mackenzie Posted 31 August , 2003 Posted 31 August , 2003 Oliver. According to the 1901 census, George Jephson was from Ayot St Peter, near Welwyn in Hertfordshire (see here). At the time he was 25 and a Lieutenant on the Niobe based in Gibraltar. Neil
Guest Olivier G Posted 31 August , 2003 Posted 31 August , 2003 Thanks everybody :-) I’m glad you made my day ! I’m still wondering why he died here in Nice (aged 41, by the way) ! ! I know there was a military hospital and the Mediterranean sea is in town ! so maybe he was dropped off here ! A sunny salute from Nice Olivier G
Neil Mackenzie Posted 31 August , 2003 Posted 31 August , 2003 oliver. If you havn't seen this already the Dartmouth would have looked like this (Weymouth Class) HMS Niobe ended up in the Canadian Navy and some basic info on it can be found here (HMS Niobe) Sorry I cannot help with Commander Jephson, though isn't it likely he died of illness/disease rather than wounds? Neil
