brownag Posted 29 August , 2003 Posted 29 August , 2003 Is there anyone out there with knowledge of troop train crashes in France in 1916? Specifically on 24th Nov. 1916. One of the fatalities from the crash (an MT ASC man) is listed on the Loos Memorial so I'm guesing it was in the Loos area. Cheers Adam
Paul Reed Posted 29 August , 2003 Posted 29 August , 2003 In my dim and distant memory I do recall something about this - I think it was somewhere between Bethune and Lillers, i.e. some way from the front, and was a troop train collision or derailment... sorry I can't be any more specific, but records of the Railway Operating Department (ROD) of the REs, who ran the railways in France, might help - the RE Museum at Chatham may have something?
Patrick Posted 30 August , 2003 Posted 30 August , 2003 Hi adam , Have x-put your question on Histoforums , as we have discussed this almost two years ago , and i have forgotten the details , for shure we'll get some answers . if need be will translate upon my return from vienna . I remember something of brakes not functioning on a steep decent , but this was in the alp region (not shure) troops comming back or going to Italy http://www.1914-18.org/~histoforums/pgm/af...php?nummsg=8675 cheers Patrick
brownag Posted 3 September , 2003 Author Posted 3 September , 2003 Paul / Patrick Sorry for the delay in replying, there are just too many posts to keep up with these days! Patrick - thanks for the reply but I'm afraid the train crash I was looking for was on another date. Paul - thanks for the tip, I'll add a letter to the RE museum to the long list of things to be done. Thanks again lads Cheers Adam
Sue Light Posted 27 September , 2009 Posted 27 September , 2009 Yesterday I was taking images of the unit war diary of 29 Casualty Clearing Station for someone, and when I came to edit the images this morning I came across this account of the train crash. Sue And the second page:
