MelPack Posted 20 September , 2011 Share Posted 20 September , 2011 Carninyj It is worthwhile adding this information to the classic thread here: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4448 As Michelle has suggested, Chris will eventually add it to his LLT site here: http://www.1914-1918.net/brothersdied.htm Mel
MelPack Posted 20 September , 2011 Share Posted 20 September , 2011 Just checked - they are already on the LLT: Robert, 36, and William Archibald died while serving with 16th Battalion, the Royal Scots, near La Boisselle. Born in Dollar, Clackmannanshire, son of Robert and Elizabeth Archibald latterly of Tobago, British West Indies. Robert was the husband of Isabel Armstrong Cameron Archibald of 1 Trafalgar Road, Twickenham, Middlesex. The brothers, who may have been living with family in Anstruther, have adjacent regimental numbers suggesting they enlisted together. Robert has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing; William is buried in Gordon Dump Cemetery near La Boisselle. Submitted by Kevin Dunion, researching for his book "The Democracy of War - Anstruther and Cellardyke in the First World War" Mel

BereniceUK Posted 13 September , 2012 Share Posted 13 September , 2012 Just found these twin brothers buried in Coppenhall (St Michael) Churchyard, Cheshire. Notice that the only difference in their details are their first names and service numbers (consecutive). VILLIERS-RUSSELL, Henri Senior Reserve Attendant M/10984. H.M.S. "Formidable." Royal Naval Auxiliary Sick Berth Reserve 1st January 1915. Age 29. Son of Isabelina Villiers-Russell, of 17, Audley St., Crewe, and the late Benjamin Villiers-Russell. His twin brother, John, also died on service in the same incident. VILLIERS-RUSSELL, John Senior Reserve Attendant M/10985. H.M.S. "Formidable." Royal Naval Auxiliary Sick Berth Reserve 1st January 1915. Age 29. Son of Isabelina Villiers-Russell, of 17, Audley St., Crewe, and the late Benjamin Villiers-Russell. His twin brother, Henri, also died on service in the same incident. I read somewhere that the Villiers-Russell twins were washed ashore in each other's arms and the subsequent national outcry helped bring about a ruling that no brother should serve in the same unit as his sibling. hamishmck Posted 25 January , 2013 Share Posted 25 January , 2013 Hi i am rather late in joining this debate but I have 2 brothers both died from wounds at Gallipoli but 24 days apart. Interestingly, youngest brother wounded in early May and transferred to Alexandria and died in June 23rd. Oldest Brother wounded and died 31.5.1915. They also lost a 1st cousin in September 1915 and is buried at sea, another 1st cousin died 23.10.1918 in Beirut another 1st cousin 24.10 1918 died in le cateau.and brother to another 1st cousin (my grandfather my picture profile) was sent back from france 3 times with wounds and illness. So out of the 6 eligable family members, 5 killed and 1 wounded twice and ill once. how does this stack up in the big scheme of things. cheers

PRC Posted 6 July , 2013 Share Posted 6 July , 2013 The Hastings brothers from Cromer, Archibald and Bertie both died serving with the 1st/5th Norfolk Regiment in the Second Battle of Gaza on the 19/04/1917 Archibald was born on the 6th December 1888 and Bertie on the 20th November 1890 - both were baptised in the church of St Peter and St Paul, Cromer. Their names appear both on a Roll of Honour inside the church and the War Memorial in the churchyard. Archibald's entry on CWGC. Serial number 240038 http://www.cwgc.org/...INGS, ARCHIBALD Bertie's entry on CWGC. Serial number 240043 http://www.cwgc.org/...ASTINGS, BERTIE The relevant panel from the War Memorial. http://www.flickr.co...N00/8750750004/ From the village of Dilham and lost with the sinking of the Transport Royal Edward on the 13th August 1915, there is Arthur and Sidney Morter. They were sons of Walter and Sarah Morter. As this memorial has already been researched by the Roll of Honour site, I've put my own research on a backburner but I do have a picture of a family headstone which lists them both with the epitaph that they were "drowned from the SS Royal Edward whilst on active service". Arthur and Sidney were part of two batches of volunteers from the 3rd Norfolk Battalion that were on there way to make good the losses of the 1st Essex. Its an odd-mix generally on CWGC for these men - some seem to have officially transferred to the 1st Essex and also have MIC's whilst others are shown as 3rd Norfolks and don't. http://www.roll-of-h...olk/Dilham.html Arthur Morter.
