Verrico2009 Posted 1 October , 2010 Share Posted 1 October , 2010 De Ruvigny states 2nd Lieut E H Tottie "died 22nd Sept 1914, from wounds received in action at the Battle of the Aisne on the 19th of that month". Gives the additional information he was 5th Foot.
Old Owl Posted 1 October , 2010 Share Posted 1 October , 2010 Hi Alan, I have now had a look and have located photos of each of the brothers. I can copy these and will send them to you next week--please could you PM me your email? Eric Harald Tottie was killed during the fighting in the Aisne region of France and was mortally wounded within 4 days of joining his battalion at the front. He was educated at Winchester and the RMC Sandhurst--I have no record of where his brother was educated but will see what I can find. Perth Digger Posted 23 February , 2011 Share Posted 23 February , 2011 This is possibly a case of two brothers being mortally wounded on the same day and on the same battlefield, but dying on different days. Capt Daniel MacDougald COWIE, 10/11th Highland Light Infantry, DOW on 17/9/1916 after the attack on Martinpuich and was buried in Millencourt Communal Cemetery Extension. In the same division his brother, 2/Lt William Cowie, 13th Royal Scots, DOW 28/9/1916 and was buried at Etaples Military Cemetery. The 13th also attacked Martinpuich on the 15th and seems not to have been in later attacks before the 28th. Of course, there may have been a day or two between their woundings. Can anyone give any more specific information please? The Cowie family were originally from Lanarkshire, but had migrated to Australia (NSW) before the war. A third brother, Lt James Cowie, served in the 9th HLI and the 7th Duke of Wellington's. He appears to have survived the war.
Chris_Baker Posted 23 February , 2011 Share Posted 23 February , 2011 I shall add the latest posts to the LLT in due course. I have a backlog of about 30 sets of brothers to add, but it is taking a back seat to a major site overhaul I am currently carrying out.

carninyj Posted 20 September , 2011 Share Posted 20 September , 2011 I'm aware that this is in the wrong location but I can't see how to post it in the right one! I came across a headstone in Anstruther Wester Churchyard - the church is now derelict a in danger of collapse - recording the deaths of the two brothers, Robert Archibald and William Murray Archibald, Royal Scots, on the 1st July 1916. I don't think that they are recorded in the 'Brothers who died on the same Day' section. They appear to be: ARCHIBALD, ROBERT Initials: R Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Royal Scots Unit Text: 16th Bn.
