I am in two minds on whether to review this book for the Forum as Paul is a highly respected member of it. If the general view of the Pals is that this is OK, I shall post a review.

Views please.

Although I wouldn't dare to claim I speak for Paul, I would say that I think he would welcome a review of his book.

If it was a book I had written, then I'd be glad (although a little put-out) to have any errors pointed out or suggestions put forward for making the book better.

As it is, I took the said book with me on my first battlefield visit, which was fortunate as it was to the Somme :D

I think you should review it - I'm sure that Paul is thick skinned enough for anything that you might mention. Goodness know it wasn't that bad... :-)

I've read it and found it enormously useful. What are your thoughts Ian?

For me it's not necessary any more!! I just bought it, and it's really worth it! Our community should be glad to see such committed guys like Paul. It is not a question of commercialism - it is a question of dedication (since I guess that Paul does not become rich with this book , but maybe the publisher)

This is simply a "must have" for anyone going to the Somme whether for the first or umpteenth time. Paul also did a Walking the Salient which I have not yet used but expect is an equally essential field book.

I have this and a couple others that Paul Reed has written. I've found each of them very helpful and I think they are well done. I'd welcome the chance to see anothers view.

All the best,

Jon

Author's shouldn't write books if they can't accept people will review them... nice to read so many of you have found it of use in the field. Thanks for your kind comments.

I have several copies of Walking the Salient on the shelf which are frequently being used by our guests. Never heard anything but praise on this book. Several of our guests went out to the tourist office of Ypres to obtain there own copy, so that is the best proof it is good value for money!

A Dammed good book, I am looking forward to Pauls next offering. Pauls great advantage is that he is not elitise, and as this Forum shows he is always willing to help. His Books should aways be in your pocket. Mine are well worn and have given me a good insight into the Battlefields.

On the last couple of visits to the Somme I have had 'Walking the Somme' with me and found it to be a cracking guide. Paul has done a great job on this book. Many thanks Neil Drum.

Well to be perfectly honest with you, I think "Walking The Somme" is a load of cra- just kidding. ;) . It's a good read, a great guide and my copy has now fallen apart.

What's your next book Paul?

Walking Arras - which will be out in early 2004. That makes number five for P&S and my last effort for them... its off to fields with rumours of other wars then...

OK. I spent some time at the PRO doing some background yesterday and hope to post my review in the next couple of days.

I must confess that I am a book lover and spend far too much on Great War books of all kinds. And I hate to even crack the spine on my softback books, which results in some strange peering into half-open pages.

Having said that, my Walking the Somme is in very poor condition - mainly because it has spent many hours with me on the Somme, rain or shine. This is one that is far more valuable in my rucksack than at home on the shelf. I took it on my first Somme visit and thoroughly recommend it, especially for new visitors to the area.

Must buy a shiny new copy for the shelf though!

"Walking the Somme" is an excellent book and useful for beginner and experienced battlefield visior. Highly recommended - and I'm afraid I can't say that about all the Battleground Europe series.

Apologies for being late in posting this review - my recent accident has meant that I have had to read the book again and validate some of my notes!

Anyway hope to post in the next week.
