Help please - I'm trying to prove that an ancestor was in the 1st Battalion (H Coy) in 1896, and NOT in the 2nd Battalion as I have proof he was from 1901 to 1909. If I can prove this, then I have a photograph of him in a 1st Battalion Football team from the Regimental Magazine, The Tiger and the Rose from 1896. Where were the 1st and 2nd battalions serving in 1894-6 period, and is it likely he would have served initially with the 1st Battalion in Pontefract from late 1894 onwards ?

My Great Great Uncle enlisted in the Yorks & Lancs Regt attesting in London on 12th September 1894. He was 21 years old. He was attested by Colour Sgt Littlejohn, and joined at Pontefract on 13th September. He signed on for 7 years of Army Service and 5 years of Reserve Service. Records of his GC pay in 1901 and 1907 show he was at that time in the 2nd Battalion; His death certificate in 1909 also shows he was in the 2nd Battalion. He died in Connaught Hospital, Aldershot aged 34 of heart failure caused by alcoholism.

Thanks Peter
