I'll start the bidding - a cavalry unit in the 1930s -

possibly based at Alderhot (based on the water tower seen in the rear of the second picture)

.........but I could be wrong

Delta's right - definately cavalry - you can see jodpers(?) (riding trousers anyway) and spurs on the men in the foreground. As for location..... not a clue.

I reckon as it's cavalry and it looks like a "Castle" emblem on the banner, therefore it could only be either the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards or 6th Dragoons(The Inniskillings).

The 5th Dragoon Guards and the 6th Dragoons were amalgamated in 1922 (Army Order 132), and became the 5/6th Dragoons, changed to 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards in 1927, and to 5th Royal Innisklilling Draggon Guards in 1935. I'd agree with dating it to 1930's, and all I can say is that I spent a couple of enjoyable TA weekends in the 80's in the old Cavalry Barracks at Colchester, which certainly looked like the ones on the photos!

Steve,

Can't disagree with the amalgamation, but the Old Comrades Associations would have kept seperate identities as they do now.

Re the loctaion ; I must admit I was unsure about suggesting Aldershot as the bricks were the wrong colour.

Perhaps one of our Essex men can help - even though, as the barracks are in the process of redvelopment, the cavalry blocks themselves may no longer exist

Steven - me too, but in the 90's with 6 Royal Anglian. Only realised much later that my Great Grandfather would also have stayed there when he was stationed at Colchester with the 16th Lancers.

If anyone has Blackadder goes forth, the band at the beginning were filmed at the Cavalry Barracks.

If there were any women in the picture you'd be able to tell, Colchester women are, well, memorable to say the least.....

Hi,

I do not reside in Colchester, but I did work there for several years. Cavalry Barracks are still in tact, with very little alterations being made to them. They can be found off of Butt Road which is to the south-west of the town centre. The re-development is further south of the town towards the outskirts of Colchester.

It was at these barracks that they filmed the opening scenes of one of the 'Black Adder' series.

Arthur

I am an Essex man and was stationed in Colchester in the very early 70s. The old Cavalry Barracks were the next Barracks along from Goojarat Barracks which was demolished while I was in Colchester, we used it for Northern Ireland training. Jolliffe the military tailors if I remember correctly wae on the opposite side of the road.

John,

Your Correct! Gojarat were modernized and are now a much larger Barracks.

I don't think it's Colchester - different design of barracks as can be see here:

http://www.camulos.com/postcards.htm#garrison

If it was 6 Dragoon Guards they were at Willems Barracks, Aldershot, from 1.2.22 to 31.8.22, but again the design doesn't look right:

Another option is York I guess, but no photos I'm afraid.

Terry,

We could be wrong thinking that it is Colchester!

However, there is strong evidence to suggest that the water tower [locally known as Jumbo] can be plainly seen in the photograph. This landmark would easily be depicted as in the photograph from where the Cavalry Barracks are situated in Colchester.

Hello Arthur

Is this the tower that you are referring to? (Jumbo superimposed for reference)

The other possible "evidence" in favour of Colchester is the landmark on the skyline about one and a half inches in from the right which looks not dissimilar (as much as blurred outline images can do) to the tower on Colchester town hall.

The two towers (good name for a book that!) do not look the same to me, one appears round while the other appears rectangular.

I can't find any photograpths etc which strongly reflect the photo below (Water Tower picture).

The nearest match I've found is the Cavalry Barracks at Colchester (date unknown) but there are too many aspects which don't add up for my liking. The buildings would need to have been dramatically modified (not unrealistic), some demolished and the new Chimneys (surely their biggest identifier!) installed.

Cavalry Barracks

Taken from Various postcards

What date would other posters put on the building? perhaps late 1800s?
