Roop,

That pig cost some money, an Able Seaman with 6 years service was earning 1/11d a day thats over two days pay a pound?. I doubt they worried about the cost of a pint though.

Merry Xmas Charles

Charles,

You must remember this mob had starved in East Africa and partly in France for a while. Not much would stand between them and a decent feast. My grandparents had a photo of this feast hung on a wall until it got tidied up in the 30's and burnt. The beer was from the small brewery in Saulsoir.

Roop,

I am sure they deserved the feast because thats what it was, the money they paid for the Pig was nothing but extortion. A senior private today earns 65.50 a day without any allowances. 131.00 a pound?? that was ... I cannot think of a word I can print.

Regards Charles
