tonycad Posted 23 December , 2005 Share Posted 23 December , 2005 There was no immediate post WW1 field memorial to the 38th Welsh Division. I do not know how much this was due to the Corps and Army's displeasure at the Division's alleged "stickiness" in the attack on Mametz Wood. I had visited the Dragon Memorial a couple of times before I found this Memorial as an altar feature in the Church in Mametz Village. I do not know when in was installed, but I think it did something to redress the delay in the construction of the field monument. Tony
Paul Reed Posted 23 December , 2005 Share Posted 23 December , 2005 This is the original memorial to the division; it dates from the 1920s. Few people realise it exists inside Mametz church, which sadly is rarely open these days.
tonycad Posted 24 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 24 December , 2005 Paul, Once again, thank you for putting my contributions to the Forum into historical context, and bringing us up-to-date with recent events. I seem to remember seeking out the key for the Mametz Church, to have a look at, and to photograph the 38th Division Memorial. Thank you once more.
