Ciaran Byrne Posted 23 August , 2003 Share Posted 23 August , 2003 I have just read "There's a Devil in the Drum" and have to say that it is not just one of the best books about man in combat during WWI but men in combat period. It is up there with "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer and "Das Boot" by Bucheim. Basicaly it is about two brothers who join the Royal Irish Rifles before the war and it is an account of one of their experiences. It is funny, sad and even tragic at times. Very moving in places and really gives the reader an idea of what went on during WWI. Somebody from the forum recommended this book to me (his name escapes me now - sorry!!!) but it is one of the best books I have ever read...get it...borrow it...steal it. You will not be disappointed!
gem22 Posted 23 August , 2003 Share Posted 23 August , 2003 Ciaran I have to agree with you. This is among my favourites. However no need to steal it a reprint is readily available. Garth
