shaymen Posted 18 December , 2005 Share Posted 18 December , 2005 Has anyone any info on Square Farm / or Trench maps with its location. I know it was a couple of miles from Armentieres. My interest stems from a KIA on 14th Feb 1917 I am researching from my local mem. 'I saw Gray killed by a rifle bullet through the heart about 10.00p.m on the 14thFebruary when out wiring in front of our trenches near Square Farm about two miles from Armentieres' Any help appreciated Glyn

Smithmaps Posted 10 February , 2007 Share Posted 10 February , 2007 I'm afraid I cannot find it marked on 10,000 or 20,000 maps for the line to the east of Armentieres. It is not listed in Rats Alley either. Sorry Cheers Guy

Livewireshock Posted 27 August , 2018 Share Posted 27 August , 2018 Square Farm is near La Chapelle-Armentieres. The sector was more commonly referred to and is currently signposted at the Mushroom Salient. This was the first sector in the frontline that the 41st Bn AIF entered on Christmas Eve 2014. To find the frontline on a modern map, it essentially followed the route of Ruelle de la Blanche. The right angle bend in the road jutted out into no mans land, creating the mushroom shaped salient. The Square Farm referred to a fortified farm building with a moat around it, which is common in the area.
