Milner Posted 16 December , 2005 Share Posted 16 December , 2005 Does anyone know if there is a record of ships torpedod or lost in ww1 online. My grandfathers service record states that he lost his papers when S.S. Galliery was torpedod. I not 100% sure the spelling is correct of the ship and would like to check this. Date of new papers 10-1 1918. His brother also in the navy has the same thing on his papers only the ship is S.S. Westwood 2-10-1918 second question does anyone know of a ship H.M.S. Simoun again not 100% sure of the spelling Thanks Phil
BottsGreys Posted 16 December , 2005 Share Posted 16 December , 2005 Phil: Check these links and scroll straight down in each to the Destroyer list to find the HMS Simoom, which may be your ship. It was lost to German destroyers on 23 January, 1917. If you click on the Simoom name on the list in the second link, it will show you a photo of the ship. http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/losses.htm http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/old_r_class_1916.htm Regards, Chris
Michael Lowrey Posted 16 December , 2005 Share Posted 16 December , 2005 Phil, "Galliery" would most likely be the Gallier, a 4592 grt, steamer built in 1914 of the Lloyd Loyal Line, a division of Brys & Glysen Ltd., London. She was torpedoed and sunk on January 2, 1918 7 miles ENE from Wolf Rock by the German submarine U 95 while on a voyage from Le Havre for Barry and in ballast. No lives lost. Westwood, a 1968 grt steamer built in 1907 of the Frisken, Withy & Co. Ltd, Glasgow. She was torpedoed and sunk on October 3, 1918 5 miles SW1/2W from the Lizard by the German submarine UB 112 while on a voyage from Bary to Le Havrewith a cargo of coal. One life lost. There were actually two Royal Navy destroyers named Simoon: the "R" class destroyer launched on October 30, 1916 and sunk January 23, 1917 and an "S" class destroyer launched on January 26, 1918.
