Guest girving Posted 14 December , 2005 Share Posted 14 December , 2005 I have found 2 medal cards for my Grandfather, who served with the Civil Service Rifles, as a QuarterMaster Sergeant. One is for the Military Medal (1916) On the other card (Feb 1919)the "Military Medal" Heading has been crossed through and TFE written in. Can someone tell me what TFE stands for, please? Thank you
T8HANTS Posted 14 December , 2005 Share Posted 14 December , 2005 Hi I think it should be Territorial Forces Efficiency Medal Instituted by King Edward, and of superseded the old Voluteer Long Service medal given after 12 years service and at least 12 "trainings" Gareth
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 14 December , 2005 Share Posted 14 December , 2005 (edited) Also the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal could be earned during war Time for a shorter span of service as "War Service"[ie embodied] counted Double,so for example service from 1st January 1915 to 1st January 1919{4 Years} would count as 8 Years towards his TEFM,so he would only need to serve another 4 "Normal" years, prior to August 1914,or after demobilisation{ie:disembodiment for TF Men} Edited 14 December , 2005 by HarryBettsMCDCM

I'm a bit puzzled by the service requirements for the medal as I believe he only served from 1914-1919 and then went back to civilian life in the Civil Service . However, that's something I can research. Thank you again for your replies

HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 15 December , 2005 Share Posted 15 December , 2005 As a Civil servant & member of the 15th London {CSR} Regt,A Territorial Force Battalion;& reaching the heady heights of QMS I would be surprised if he hadn't some Prewar{1914} or Post 1919 Service,if you post his Number that may well give a clue to his date of enlistment{3/4 figure}anything beneath 2500 would suggest pre 1914,the lower the Number the ealier the enlistment[1~1000 Figures suggest 1908~1910s]
