CROONAERT Posted 23 September , 2003 Author Share Posted 23 September , 2003 Glenn. There's no actual reference to gas being used, but the description of Thiepval Wood on the night of 1/2 July describe it as "reeking of gas fumes" and of men stumbling about in their respirators. No specifics are given, but this shows that it must have been used. Dave.
Bob Coulson Posted 10 October , 2003 Share Posted 10 October , 2003 Dave, I'm currently looking into the 7th Green Howards at Fricourt on 01/07/16. Being in the same brigade do they get much of a mention in relation to the 10th West Yorks action that fateful day. Would be grateful for any info. Bob. Andrew P Posted 15 January , 2004 Share Posted 15 January , 2004 Anyone needing any "look-ups" from this regimental history, just ask. Dave Hi Dave Could you do a look up for me in the West Yorkshire regimental history? I'm looking for information on a Leslie Alfred Davies who seemed to have served as a Captain in the 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment. I was going through the photo collection here at work and found a photo of him in uniform. He was born in Fremantle Western Australia on 11/06/1893 and lived much of his early life here before serving in the British forces in WW1. After the war he seems to have stayed in England as he died on the 18/05/1973 at Bournemouth. Thats all the info I have on him, so anything extra would be appreciated. Cheers Andrew
CROONAERT Posted 15 January , 2004 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2004 Hi Andrew. Nothing in the index or appendixes. I've quickly browsed through it to see if I could see any mention, but nothing turned up. Short of actually ploughing through all 800+ pages, that's all I can manage. Sorry. Dave. Brigantian Posted 24 January , 2004 Share Posted 24 January , 2004 Dave, I am researching a local war memorial and two of the commemorated men served in the West Yorkshire Regiment: 1) Rifleman 55094 Joseph Ernest Gill, 1st/7th Battalion West Yorks. He was killed in action on 16 April 1918 and is listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial. 2) L/Cpl 10530 Franklin Holland, 9th Battalion West Yorks. He was killed in action on 6 August 1915 at Gallipoli and is listed on the Helles Memorial. I would be most grateful for any information on these two Battalions for the relevant dates. Thank you, Mark
