Railway Companies

I had a query from a fellow researcher whose grandad was in the 5th Broad Gauge Australian Railway as to what badges he would have worn to signify that he was in a Railway Company. She already has his unit colours but was wondering about whether they also wore any badges.

I am probably not giving the definitive answer you are looking for but.......

Generally speaking the hat badge and collar badge worn by all members of the AIF were only the rising sun badges. There were two notable exceptions, the Artillery with the RAA badge and collars and the Naval Bridging Train who had an anchor on their AIF uniform, and hat. There were a lot of unofficial and militia badges that seem to find their way into collections, some are very well made and ornate, some look like they were made in some back yard in Cairo (probably because they were). I don't know if the 5th Broad Gauge Australian Railway had their own badge, I would suspect that they something was made for them, just as the 4th Railway Unit of the A.I.F. had, as seen below.
