I am hunting down Lt (Later Capt) H G Head who won a MC at the battle of Flers -Courcellete in mid Sep 1916. Have got his medal card, several links to the London Gazette, the Tank Corps CDrecord and lots of details from studies of the battle but no christian names.

Can some one offer a clue as where next I can go?

I would think that's him, Welshdoc.

The Tank Corps were the Heavy Section of the MGC back in 1916, early 1917.

Steve.

That could well be the boy - almost all of the young officers were MGC - will keep tracking.

Many thanks

Stephen

P.S.

I have been spending many hours on the Gazette but with little joy; I searched again after your message and could not find him under Harold Head - only with the full name. Strange search engine the Gazette seems to utilise :(

Delta,

I'm very interested in your man, I'm glad you have now identified him.

My grandfather was also awared an MC for Flers. He was in 123 Coy MGC (123 Bde, 41 Div), the awards were made at a parade of the Bde on 15.10.1916 by the GOC 41 Div (Lawford) the Bde WD notes that 3 MCs and 14 MMs were awarded (but does not name any recipients !!). Gfather's award was Gazetted on 14.11.1916.

So, I would be very interested to know exactly which unit Harold George Head was in. I'm trying to track down the other winners from 123 Bde - and would certainly be interested in other MGC winners.

Julian

2Lt Head was the commander of Tank D3; one of the several tanks which was tasked to support the infantry in the area of Flers. He was a member of D Company of the Heavy Branch of the MGC (so named as part of the security surroudning the first use of tanks). Unfortunately his tank was hit by artillery fire as it moved across the open ground and aftre making tis way to a place of safety was parked up and (i believe) subsequently recovered.

Head was in action again, at Gueudecourt on 28th September when his tank was hit again ; I cannot be certain, as a result of which action, the MC was awarded
