Jerrymurland Posted 7 December , 2005 Share Posted 7 December , 2005 One of my (many) Great Uncles who served abroad, in this case France, has a strange MIC. No info!! Any particular reason for this or did he not claim his medals?

Jerrymurland Posted 7 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 7 December , 2005 This is Walter Goode's record, or part of it. I'm confused as to which regiment he actually served in. He was commissioned into the 3/4th Buffs which were reserve battalions and presumably remaining in the UK. Does this mean the 1st Herts was his regiment? they were in France at the time he was wounded. However if you look at his medal card he has no medals awarded. any suggestions would be helpful. Terry_Reeves Posted 7 December , 2005 Share Posted 7 December , 2005 (edited) Jerry His regiment was the Buffs, however it was not unusual for officers to be attatched to other regiments as casualty replacements whilst still retaining their original cap badge. At some stage he appears to have been transferred to the Indian Army Reserve of Officers. Even so, he appears to have qualified for the British War and Victory medal. The November 1918 Army List shows him as a Lt with a seniority date of 10 July 1917 and on the Regimental list of the Buffs. The lack of an entry on his MIC is a bit of a mystery though. HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 8 December , 2005 Share Posted 8 December , 2005 Have you checked for a further Card? the Reference code probably refers to the Medal Roll that records his entitlement{in Comments section}
Max (UK) Posted 8 December , 2005 Share Posted 8 December , 2005 That's wierd Any other cards for him?
Michael Posted 8 December , 2005 Share Posted 8 December , 2005 I can confirm that his name doesn't appear in the medal rolls for Buffs officers. He first appears in Army List under the 4th Buffs is in Feb 1916. The first Army List that shows him attached to the Herts is September 1916 as a 2nd Lieut in the 4th Buffs with seniority of 10 Jan 1916. Prior to this he is shown as attached to either the 1st or 3rd Buffs. Mick Mills
Jerrymurland Posted 8 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 8 December , 2005 Thanks Guys, this is a strange one and I actually think he has another medal card under the name of W.H.E.N Goode, who was also in the 1st Herts and in India around the same time as my man. However there are some date mismatches and WHEN Goode apparently was awarded the 1915-15 Star. My man did not go out until 1916 - presumably. Jerrymurland Posted 8 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 8 December , 2005 This is WHEN Goode's MIC. He was in the same regiment and also in the Indian Army in the 9th Secunderbad Division. Is it possible these two are the same person despite the fact there are some date differences? I need to get hold of a nominal roll for the 1st Herts, any offers? Michael Posted 8 December , 2005 Share Posted 8 December , 2005 He could have gone out with the Sussex Yeomanry I guess, but they were in Egypt and Gallipoli in 1915 which contradicts the theatre of war on the MIC. What is the document you posted initially? There are 2 W Goode's service records on Procat to have a look at. Could the first one be the Goode in the first MIC you posted and the second one be WHEN Goode WO 374/27921 GOODE, Capt W 1915-1925 WO 374/27922 GOODE, 2/Lieut W H 1914-1920
Jerrymurland Posted 9 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 9 December , 2005 Thankd Michael, the original document came from Walter Goode's file WO 374/27921. I can't believe I missed the other reference relating to WH Goode! Another visit to Kew on the cards.
