Transfer to the Lincs from the Queens Regt.

Chaps

I cannot think where I read or heard it, but was there at sometime a contingency of men transferred from the Queens Regt to one particular battalion of the Linc R?

A man that I am looking into was with the Queen's and moved to the Linc R - being given a number in the

40000.

Am I right, or did I imagine this ?

I think there was a similar movemnt with the Royal Scots. A fair amount of movement between regiments.

The topic concerned the Sussex Regiment............unless I missed one on the Queens?

I know a collector of Queens and he has never mentioned this to me?

Lee,

I'm at work right now  but will later attach the link discussing the transfer. If memory serves me right it was Lincs lads going into the Queens.

The Lincs 40*** numbers are a little strange, but if you post your lad's Lincs number I'll pull what I have.

If you search on the MICs with the regiment as "linc* AND Queen" and the number as 4???? , you get 175 men in the area of about number 42700 who transferred to (from?) the Queens Regiment with numbers 156xxx to 157xxx. Seems to be a batch....

Stevs X2 & Jim

It really is doing my head in - where did I see this snippet?

I know about the Sussex and Lincs types {George Empringham's Plaque is part of my lot)

I am at work too - 2/10 and nights who needs it and yesterday as well, and working 2/10 on days off - must be crackers.

Anyway, the Chaps name was Frederick Wagstaff who went from the Queens to the Lincs, if an MIC is to be believed. I don't have his number to hand at present. I think they all went to one battalion - 6/7/8/Lincs. Deffo New Army. Ent pair BWM/VM. Number not to hand but 427*** rings a bell. I was trying to suss out where he was from. In time I'll get his papers looked for.

What about the link to the Royal Scots - a batch of Lincs lads went over to them in 1917, it is believed.

I'll post the full number when I get home.

His full details will be posted among the MIC details that I am posting in the documents section.

Thanks lads

LEE

Back to work

With your London Gazette transcriptions and your variations and combinations, it would seem that you can work your way into any site.

Cheers again for your help with that lot.

The old thread (with the transfer going the opposite way) is here:

Looks to me they transferred to the 8th (maybe as part of the Jan 1918 re-organization), with Smith dying with the 7th Lincs, after being transferred??

Hope it helps,

Jim

You are an absolute star - just what I was looking for.

I knew I had seen it somewhere - Wagstaff has a medal in my collection and another of the transfer batch has come up for sale locally. I think I'll have it.

I'll get the rest of my lot off to you by PM in the next day or so :)

Cheers

Fascinating. It would be inteteresting to see if there are also any number patterns for other units.......like the Tank Corps for example.......129 hits for those also.

So far I have found a couple of thjese number patterns - for Lincs to East Yorks and Lincs to Scots Fus and HLI. Not as many in the contingent, as with the Queen's Regt.

You say you have a mate who collects to the Queen's Regt. Is that WW1 only or does he collect later medals?

It took me a bit of time to get to my man, 5173 Pte George Empringham and his papers.

The Lincolns that went to this regt went to the 12th & 13th Bn. and renumbered with a G prefix, i.e.G15405 as in the case of Empringham, who started his military life with 1/5th Linc.R.

These men transferred prior to October, 1917.

Reason for transfer is unknown.

However given your mans relatively late number, he could have gone straight to the R.Suss. as soon as he landed in France, transferring from his local unit.

Thats about all, I'm afraid.

thanks for the reply Lee.

with my man having a late number do you think he went into the 12 or 13bn surreys or do you think he could have gone into another btn.

i don't know much about him all i do know is that he survived the war and that he was my grandfathers brother.

Out of interest the man next to Empringham on the Medal Rolls, Percy Foster (Alkborough), won a MM at St Juilian in July 1917 with the 12th Sussex, whilst acting as a runner. So puts the transfer before July 1917, and the lack of a six digit number for this group indicates they transferred before April 1917. I had a look through the Sussex Diaries and they do recieve several large batches during the late summer of 1916, although unfortunatley the origins of these drafts is not stated.

  • 5 years later...

Just had a link to this thread with reference to Webster 42769, and noted that someone is researching a Wagstaff - I have a photo labelled Wagstaff (Rushden) - the latter is near George Websters home town of Raunds. It would be interesting to know if that is your man - I'll post the picture when I have time to get it scanned (I have a load to do...)
