Joe Walsh Posted 6 December , 2005 Share Posted 6 December , 2005 My grandad got an mm, but a lot of other warrant officers and sergeants I have noticed got MC's. The MC is as far as Iknow the officers equivalent of the mm, so why did my man get aan mm and not an mc if so many othe warrant officers and sergeants got mc's. HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 6 December , 2005 Share Posted 6 December , 2005 Sergeants couldn't get the MC,Warrant Officers were entitled to be awarded it under certain circumstances, but that did not preclude them from awards of the MM;following an amendment to the Royal Warrant just prior to the end of the War.Only just over 1000 MCs were awarded to WOs,out of a total of some 40000 Awards[inc Bars] r

PhilB Posted 8 December , 2005 Share Posted 8 December , 2005 I was under the impression that the MM was quite a rare award to WOs (a bit infra dig!), but a look at the LF awards indicates otherwise. I would guess that WOs actually got more MMs than MCs, though they do seem over-represented in the DCM list. Phil B

Phil B especially considering their official eligibility to the MM;was only granted in the latter stages of the War,with the DCM;especially earlier on in the War until directives encouraged its award for Gallantry in Action Only,it was awarded for Distiguished Services, not nessecarily confined to Frontline Gallantry & Conduct.as many of the WO's citations show. Joe Walsh Posted 9 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 9 December , 2005 Well, just to confirm what was said is true my man was given a mm in 1917, in Bucquoy for gallantry, which was not in the frontlines. Thanks all Joe
