christine liava'a Posted 19 August , 2003 Posted 19 August , 2003 Does anyone have any information about the actual docks or wharves at Calais, where many troops and equipment landed? I am trying to find mention, pictures, or maps about my Fijian Labour Corps, who worked there for a while in late 1917. One is buried at Les Baraques Cemetery, Sangatte - Lekima Mua d. 1/1/1918, but I don't know what happened to him, and where exactly is Sangatte?
Tom Morgan Posted 19 August , 2003 Posted 19 August , 2003 Hello, Christine, Your soldier would almost certainly have been employed in unloading freight, rather than dealing with ships carrying troops. The Dover-Calais route was used for freight, with most (possibly all) troops who were carried from the UK arriving in France via Boulogne. Sangatte is a small coastal settlement a mile or two along the coast from Calais, to the South-West. Tom
