damandblast Posted 2 December , 2005 Share Posted 2 December , 2005 Oh my, not only have I discovered that gradfather in laws medals went walk about I now discover that a few other things, that seem to have been standard issue upon death in WW1, have vanished too. Namely the scroll and possibly a plaque too? Can anybody advise if these would have had to be claimed or if they would have been just issued to next of kin (assuming they could be found)? I am still trying to get my head around it all. And then, can anybody advise if it possible to get replacement scrolls, and if so where and what info would I need to supply? I feel so ignorant about all of this but so curious to learn more too. Suspect this is the beginning of a long learning curve. and I must admit I am finding the some of the battle strategy fascinating. Thanks in anticipation Di
welshdoc Posted 2 December , 2005 Share Posted 2 December , 2005 Yes they would have been awarded to the next of kin, as for replacements as far as I can understand there is no chance of replacement medals etc from the great war, Im afraid you wi, ll like myself and others search the ether in the small hope of finding our histories. Good luck Gareth
Dan1 Posted 6 December , 2005 Share Posted 6 December , 2005 Hi Di My understanding is that there was a claim form for the plaque and scroll that was sent to the next of kin of the deceased serviceman/woman. They had to fill it in and get a JP to countersign before returning it to obtain the plaque and scroll. A copy of this form can often be found with a soldiers records (if they survived) at the Public Records Office. Hope this is of help and good luck with your search! Dan1 Posted 6 December , 2005 Share Posted 6 December , 2005 Di, Apparently the Ministry of pensions were the source of the next of kin info. They would have the addresses for families claiming war pensions.
Derek Robertson Posted 6 December , 2005 Share Posted 6 December , 2005 Reproduction scrolls appear on E-bay all the time and sometimes death plaques do surface there to.
