tombowcock Posted 2 December , 2005 Share Posted 2 December , 2005 Hi Chaps, I've come across a chap who was awarded the "Gold Medal of Serbia". He was in the 80th Field Ambulance RAMC. He died on 10/12/1918 and is buried in Sofia Cemetery. Does anybody know what the "Gold Medal of Serbia" was or what it was awarded for ? Grateful for any help Cheers James
Neil Burns Posted 2 December , 2005 Share Posted 2 December , 2005 Hello, It was most likely the Milosh Oblitch Medal in gold (gilt) which was a bravery decoration. Take care, Neil
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 2 December , 2005 Share Posted 2 December , 2005 The Oblitch Medal was awarded in "Gold"[Gilt bronze] & Silver, relatively few being granted to UK & commonwalth troops,it being one of the many "Inter~alia" awards given by the Allied Nations for acts of bravery & Gallantry, that perhaps didnt quite meet the criteria for a UK award. All Serbian Awards for WW1 were worn on the Red ribbon. i}Oblitch Gold ii} Oblitch Silver iii} & Common Reverse
tombowcock Posted 2 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 2 December , 2005 Thanks Chaps, I knew somebody on the forum would know :-)) One assumes that there are no records of the award in existence given Serbia's troubled past ? Still interesting all the same. Once again thanks for your advice it really is most appreciated Best Wishes James
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 3 December , 2005 Share Posted 3 December , 2005 (edited) One assumes that there are no records of the award in existence given Serbia's troubled past ? Not strictly true as the award should{NB should} be recorded in the London Gazette, however finding it may be the problem!however it is unlikely that any citation will be recorded there. like most Foreign Awards to GB Troops it is quite possible that he never even saw a Serb!,but the award was given following an Action when "X" amount of Allied awards would be available to reward suitable recipients, whose names would have been put forward as worthy of some sort of recognition. so while you wont be able to discover the reason for the award{Unless mentioned in a Local Newspaper etc @ the time of award}you should be able to confirm it. CSMMo Posted 3 December , 2005 Share Posted 3 December , 2005 If you go to this page in the LG, you will see several pages of Serbian Medals. The Serbian Gold Medal for Bravery starts on this page. http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveVi...&selHonourType= I found this when researching the 4th Highland Mountain Brigade, RGA (TF). If you go back a few pages you will see the start of many different awards from the King of Serbia. Mike Morrison

Tim1915 Posted 3 December , 2005 Share Posted 3 December , 2005 Mike, I tried clicking on the link, but the web site came up with errors. Please would you either post it again, or email it to me? Regards, Tim
CSMMo Posted 3 December , 2005 Share Posted 3 December , 2005 Tim, Will do. That edition (should it help you) is 15 Feb 1917 at page 1605. (Added - I get the error too, so it seems to be a problem at the LG. - Also: the search I posed yields three returns for 13 Feb 1917, all of which actually show editions of 15 Feb 1917.) I have a list of 15 Mackay/Mckays who served with this unit including the one who won the Serbian Gold Medal. If you would be interested in exchanging information please let me know. adam1981 Posted 14 December , 2015 Share Posted 14 December , 2015 Hello, i have a question on this subject please. The London Gazette 19/09/1919 page 11759 records a Serbian ''silver medal for value'' ? the page before records ''gold medal for valour'', is this a spelling mistake in the Gazette?
