Is their anyway of knowing for what and when a soldier was put foward for a MM?

I know its normally 2 - 3 months before the date it appears on the roll and Gazette but it seems just guess work. The war diaries seldom mention ordinary ranks so these don't help either. Are their other documents available that would give the exact information needed?

If you know where he is from, then check the local newspapers of the time. Work backwards from issues near the London Gazette date. You might find a report and pic; sometimes these reports say what the award was for... such as rescuing a wounded man, carrying an important message, good work under fire etc.

Not in as many words.

Citations do exist but they were given to the recipient, and any records that were kept are "lost".

Unit histories often include a "sample" of MMs (54th Brigade has quite a lot, for example).

Newspapers sometimes give an exact date, but will help you narrow down the field.

War Diaries will usually help to narrow down the date further if they mention the MM, of course.

Bit of a swine, really.

Steve.

Some citations exist - perhaps not in the London Gazette though. Like people said papers are your only real hope - ive only found 1 out of 20 ive looked for mind

good luck

The Gazette has only citations for the later awards to Nurses, and perhaps another dozen of the 100,000+ awards. Even those aren't dated.
