Sometimes works, Ive learnt some tricks from the other chaps and chapesses on the forum. Pity it never works for my searches, still LG searching is certainly a chalenge. Hope you did not take more than a couple of fruitless hours> Cheers Gareth

Welshdoc,

Excellent, many thanks for your assistance, and so quick

Just one more question, if the LG date was Feb 1919, do you believe that he would have gained the award, sometime during the last months of the war? Also after his name rank and battalion the was (Hanley) what would this represent

regards

That would be a reasonable assumption. There are others here with more experience of the LG than I, but I tend to have found a 'lag' of about 6 months (ish) between the event and the gazette, especially in the 1918-1919 era.

Hanley would be the place given on his Records of his next of kin.

Timing the award of a Military Medal is an inexact science. Isn't it all?

However, a lot of MMs were awarded after a delay of some months. Up to early 1918 the delay was about 3 months, but late in 1918 the delay grew considerably.

Several confirmed MMs to 12th Division were won on the 5th September 1918, shown in the Signal company War Diary on the 16th October 1918 and in the Gazette on the 13th May 1919. Meanwhile, MMs won in April 1918 appeared in the July 1918 Gazettes.

So a (very) estimated date could be July/August 1918, but only in my opinion.

I have a few other details somewhere but not to hand.

Steve.
