Remembered Today:

Bury (Lancs) Virtual War Memorial

Mark Hone

Recommended Posts

As I have mentioned elsewhere, a team of pupils and I have embarked on an ambitious project to produce a Great War Virtual War Memorial For Bury, Lancashire. This is being developed partly as a contribution to the impending relocation and revamping of the Lancashire Fusiliers' Museum from its present site to a new home in the centre of Bury. After years of hemming and hawing, and debating whether to construct a site purely for old boys of our school, I have decided that we now have the capability to go the whole hog and construct a full Bury memorial, with potentially over 3,000 entries. The main job is combining the individual obituaries published by the 'Bury Times' newspaper, usually with photographs, with information from the CWGC and SDGW databases. However, I am of course interested in any additional biographical data we can collect on these men. I am beginning the project with 1916, partly because this is one of the years for which the BT published a 'Memorial Book', collecting together edited versions of all the obituaries and also because of the forthcoming 90th anniversaries of the battles of that year.

As I relate elsewhere we have already started to encounter a few complete 'men of mystery' of whom no trace can be found on CWGC, SDGW or Medal Index Cards. Nevertheless work is going ahead steadily. Any Pal who might have information which could be of assistance is invited to contact me via the forum.

Mark,

Good luck with this venture. If any of your mystery men may have a Sherwood Foresters connection then I would always being willing to take a look.

Mark,

Excellent project. If any of your men have a Bolton connection and you would like me to check the Bolton papers drop me a line. Same for any men who may have enlisted in the Liverpool Pals.

Good luck,

Bill

Bill,

On the Bolton front, could you possibly have a look for Bury Grammar School old boy, Rifleman W.D. (Dennis) Lauria, 8th King's Royal Rifle Corps, who was killed in the German attack on Hooge on 30th July 1915? He is commemorated on the Menin Gate. He was from the Old Vicarage, Ainsworth Village, but appears to have had no Bury Times obituary and we have no photo of him. I was wondering if it might have appeared in a paper 'across the border' in Bolton.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,

I called in to the Bolton Library to check out your mans details. Unfortunately the archives was closed due to a stock take. Leave the query with me and i promise to see if there is any information or a photograph. It will be two or three weeks before i have anytime to return to the archives.

Bill

Bernard,

If you come across any mentions of Radcliffe (Lancs) soldiers in the casualty lists during your MEN searches could you please let me know. In particular A.Houghton, J. Houghton, H.Houghton and J.P Hough. Don't know what Regiments (apart from H.Houghton) but they all appear on the cenotaph in Radcliffe.

Regards,

Pete

There are several Houghtons in the 1916 volume, including Harry Houghton of LF who died of fever in Egypt. However he came from Elton in Bury, not Radcliffe. We haven't done that page of the Memorial Book in detail yet, but on a quick scan I can't find him on CWGC for 1916. Another mystery man?

I'll look for these, Bernard. Some I already know about as they are Bury Grammar School men without it actually saying so in your MEN obits. Remember the Bury War Memorial does not actually exist , we are constructing it from the Bury Times/CWGC/SDGW etc records. We are at the data collection stage at the moment, so still working through the Bury Memorial Books sorting out who is who. For 1917+ there is no Memorial Book so we are going to have to trawl through the actual newspapers themselves. We've only done that for a few weeks in 1917 so far. I know Hubert Dawson is there as he was a BGS man.

For a start Dennerley , Flintoft, Hopkinson, Howarth, Hubbard, Queen,Shaw, Turner and Whitehead are in the 1916 volume and we have photos of them. H. Ingham is there but not sure that he is the same man-this one is a BGS old boy killed in September 1916. In a few weeks I should be able to give you good definition reproductions of these from scans.
