Help to trace grandad please

Milner

Recommended Posts

I have just found my grandfathers name on the 1918 absent voters list for Cambridgeshire listed as follows.

William Fuller Milner WR/331620 Cpl., I.W. & D., R.E.

I can't find his MIC online at the NRA with that number, can anyone help with that, why?

I Know what WR and R.E. mean (Waterways and Railways) and Royal Engineers.

What does I.W. & D mean ?

On my dads birth certificate in 1914 my grandfather's occupation is listed as Mariner 1st Officer, I know he was in the merchant navy then. He would have been 30 in 1918 and was born in Sunderland.

Any help would be great.

Phil

IW & D stands for "Inlands Waterways & Docks".

If he never left the UK, I think I'm right in saying that he wouldn't have an MIC.

Ive attached the medal card, what else can you tell from it, did he claim his medals?

I can see he went to France, i guess he pre-war mercahnt navy experiance gets him moved to the RE.

Many thanks

Can't see anything, Phil.

You might have to reduce the size down to fit it inside the Forum size limits.

Only officers had to claim medals. "Other ranks" were sent theirs automatically to the address given on discharge from the army. Of course, some never made it, though if the army received them back there would be a note on the MIC.

Before the war he was in the merchant navy and on my dad's birth certificate in June 1914 he is listed as mariner 1st Officer. After the war he was a captain on coastal vessals and died about 1922-1924.

So quite how he gets into the RAMC then tranfered to RNR Royal engineers, i'm not sure, any idea's on the MIC info or anything really ?? Could ADM be ADMIRALTY ?

Thanks

Phil
