john conley Posted 31 July , 2009 Share Posted 31 July , 2009 Hi All My Great Grandfather was Alfred Conley and I was told at one time he was a profesional soldier. I was also told he rejoined during the 1st world war as a driver in the RFA. I went to Kew for a look up and found his number in the medal rolls index as 139683. I then looked at the original rolls but it just gave 139683 RFA. Awarded Victory & British medals. The staff at Kew told me I would not be able to find out any more military service information for him, is this true? He came from Shoreditch in London and I have traced him on various census records so know plenty about him but nothin about his military service. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in anticipation. John C

David Porter Posted 31 July , 2009 Share Posted 31 July , 2009 John C., Alfred Conley, 139638, has 34 pages of Service Record on Ancestry. So the NA were wrong. He was in 4th City of London Royal Fusiliers, No. 113, Discharged 31-03-14. (13 years completed) He married Lilian Eliza Gal??? at St. Judes, Bethnal Green 24-05-14 5 children born before this marriage, at least one after born in Hoxton/Shoreditch He enlisted on 23-05-16 in London in the RFA and sent to No.7 Artillery Training School, Winchester (24th) Posted 67th Division as Driver 16-01-17 Admitted to 23rd British Stationary Hospital, Baghdad "Nephritis - Acute" 04-03-18 Admitted to 32 B.G.H. Amara "Nephritis - Acute" 30-03-18 In 1921 he was living at 35 Bruswick Street, Wells St., Hackney (receipt of medals) In 1935 he was living at 3 Terrace Road, Well St., S. Hackney E.9. (letter in his handwriting) He states he is a permanent invalid and requires exact dates of sickness for the British Legion. Served in Mesopotamia and "Inflamation of the Kidneys" is mentioned. I can give you a little more information if you need it - like birth dates for children. Regards, David
john conley Posted 31 July , 2009 Share Posted 31 July , 2009 Hi Colin I have searched the medal rolls. David this is fantastic information and I have now really perked up after the disappointment with the information given at Kew. If it is not too much trouble any information is welcome. Birthdates would be great as census only give ages. This is certainly my Great Granfather as I know he married Lillian Gaffie and was previously married to Ada Warbiss. I also have a photo of a soldier on a horse with Mesopotamia written on the back. From the information you have supplied it is almost certainly Alfred. I do not know where you have obtained this information but yes Keith a further trip to Kew is certainly on the cards. Thanks Gents. Karen Eves Posted 3 August , 2009 Share Posted 3 August , 2009 Apologies for being away for so long but work, research and current operations abroad have kept me too busy! I have a couple of questions if I may regarding the research of my GGF Micheal Holding of the 152nd Hackney RGA HB.......... (1) I have been advised that a book existed called The ATTESTATION book which was used for when the men enlisted in 1915. I'm specifically looking for 152nd Hackney RGA HB version - can anyone help? (2) I have a copy of General Haig's Map 1 of the SOMME and have cross referenced via the War Diary the village where the battery were sited (Mailly-Maillet), they were firing 60pdr. This is indicated on the map by a red circle with a red dot in the middle, does anybody know which dot represents which battery as I don't want to confuse any other batteries in the area. Many thanks in advance, Karen Eves
essdee Posted 3 August , 2009 Share Posted 3 August , 2009 Karen Circles with dots in the centre indicates 6" Gun batteries not 60 Pdrs. The 60 Pdrs and 4.7 " Guns were represented by filled in cirlces, circles with a cross in the middle 9.2 " & 12" Guns etc. Stuart

KONDOA Posted 5 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 5 August , 2009 Karen, it often depends upon the date of the map. Locations were sometimes used by batteries other than those indicated for periods. Roop

Ian Senior y Morrison Posted 5 October , 2010 Share Posted 5 October , 2010 A list in an earlier reply gives 255th Highland Brigade RFA becoming 1/1 Highland Brigade RFA. The 1/1st Battery of this same brigade was renumbered A' Battery. Is there any way of knowing in records which 1/1 is being referred to unless terms are used indicating brigade or battery. I have a document stating 1/1 alone
porkpie Posted 10 April , 2012 Share Posted 10 April , 2012 For all those Artillery fans out there the unit locations as from the 1st July 1913 will now appear. Graham. The R.H.A. 1913. The Royal Garrison Artillery 1913.
porkpie Posted 10 April , 2012 Share Posted 10 April , 2012 Hi Graham, I have just registered to gwf but it is only today that I have been able to see your attachments for the location of rfa units on 1st Jul 1913. The data you have presented has been very helpful in fixing the soldier I am researching for my cousin in Australia. He was George Forfar reg .no.'s 225 and 730032. The latter number puts him in 267th Brigade TF 1/2 Welch Brigade in early 1917. My question is can his brigade be located in other time periods/diaries in addition to July 1913 eg at the time when his 6 digit number was allocated. From his low TF number, I am assuming he joined the TF shortly after 1908. He was living in Cardiff at the time. I have tried locating RFA records at Cardiff Archives Centre without success. I go to London quite often so could look in at Kew National Archives but I'm not sure where to look for the info needed. Many thanks for your anticipated help Roger Jones
jamesday Posted 6 September , 2012 Share Posted 6 September , 2012 Hi All I am researching an Albert Hector Peacock whose MIC numbers indicates HAC 626486 and RFA 298230. The HAC number tallies but please could someone point me at a unit for the RFA number. BWM and VM as a Gunner. He survived the war to later die during WW2. Buried in Abergavenny. Many thanks James
David Porter Posted 6 September , 2012 Share Posted 6 September , 2012 James, The HAC number 626486 puts Albert joining in late 1917 or early 1918. If he served on a regular attestation, when transferred to Class Z Reserves after the war, he would have been given a number like the other one you have. I believe RFA numbers after 280xxx (and possibly before this) were given to men who were in Class Z Reserve, so he would not be attached to a unit. RobertBr Posted 6 September , 2012 Share Posted 6 September , 2012 I wish RFA numbering was that simple. My Grandfather number was 169149 he was in 281st Bde which supposedly has number in the range 930001-935000. Bob
steandpaula Posted 23 October , 2012 Share Posted 23 October , 2012 Hi, Where would you place number a man with the number 3522 (L/3522) on his MIC ? Regards, Ste
battiscombe Posted 23 October , 2012 Share Posted 23 October , 2012 L/3522 would be one of the locally recruited brigades - numbered L/xxxx - the number could be in more than one of them who numbered men in the series up to 1000.. his 'date of entry' may suggest which Brigade. 168th (Huddersfield) Brigade is one possibility if this is James France going to France 28/11/1915
steandpaula Posted 24 October , 2012 Share Posted 24 October , 2012 Thanks. Are you putting the Brigade suggestion purley on the to theatre date? It is the James France you mention.
Stebie9173 Posted 8 April , 2013 Share Posted 8 April , 2013 Just to bounce this incredibly useful topic back (see 1st page for Territorial artillery numbers) to the top so Search doesn't lose it. Steve.
