Can anyone tell me why this chap (my 6th cousinx2removed) was in the A.I.F.?

As far as we know he had no links to Australia at all... And why isn't he listed on the Australian War Memorial site, when others of this unit are?

There's a surprisingly large number about! :D

It's starting to look as if this chap left his wife and children to go to Australia. More research required I think!:)

Manktelow is a common name in Kent.

Albert Manktelow enlisted on 8 February 1916 at Cootamundra, NSW. The fabulous National Archives of Australia website has reams about him. Look here to see the original douments but you may have to register and sign in on the site first.

Frankly, I'm stunned!. Thank you so much for posting the link!.. My gut instinct was right, he did abandon his wife! So much detail. I can't thank you enough!:D

Yes, quite a story there. A bust up and a new life in Australia leading directly to his death. Of course, he might as easily have died in the war had he remained in England.

The Australian and Canadian online archives are unbelievably superb and a great credit to the public principles of both countries.

Here's another Australian Manktelow for you:

1200390 Pte Christopher Paul Manktelow (born 1945), served in South Vietnam with 3 Platoon, A Coy, the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment from 3/6/65 - 7/11/65. He was wounded in action and returned home.

I served with him briefly in the late 70's when he was a Lt. (and I was a private).

Recognised his surname and thought you might be interested.

Hi

Albert MANKTELOW was my paternal grandmother's brother.  I have photo of two of the Manktelow men in the AIF and while I know that one of them is William Charles MANKTELOW (AAMC)  I don't know who the other is (one of three.....)

I note that these posts go back some years but it would be nice to get some feedback
