BeppoSapone Posted 24 November , 2005 Share Posted 24 November , 2005 This is a complete guess, but it could be something to do with the Connaught Rangers? A battalion of the Connaught Rangers mutinied in India in the summer of 1920. The Connaught Rangers returned to Britain and were disbanded on 31st July 1922. Maybe this medal was made as a souvenir for ex members of the regiment? It has "mutiny" "1922" and an Irish name on the back. The medal could have been worn in the wet canteen, or similar, in Ireland since: "The regiment was formally disbanded on 31 July, after which there was no regiment of rangers in the British Army until 1968 . Many of the Irish officers and men helped form the Western Command of the new Free State Army". What do others think?
Desmond7 Posted 24 November , 2005 Share Posted 24 November , 2005 I think this is something to do with the US Marines landing at a place called Kiungkang in China in 1922. Haven't been able to google further!!

yellow Posted 25 November , 2005 Share Posted 25 November , 2005 Whats the point in faking something that no one can identify? Steve.
Duncan Posted 25 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 25 November , 2005 I did think of the Connaught Rangers thing myself. The US Marines suggestion sounds more likely. I guess someone will need to translate the Chinese (?) to know for sure. Don't think it's a copy. Duncan.

Today I see that, what is described as "oriental writing" in the description, is actually Chinese. Out of interest Des, how did you know that the USMC landed at Kiungkang, China in 1922? yellow Posted 25 November , 2005 Share Posted 25 November , 2005 There are many questions to ask: Why would a US medal be shaped like a British MC? Steve.
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 26 November , 2005 Share Posted 26 November , 2005 This is in fact a Chinese Medal given by a Chinese 'Warlord' to various recipients [including British recipients] there was a full write up on it in a past{very past} {Coins &}Medals Magazine in the 1980s,which I am trying to dig up for further details. Desmond7 Posted 26 November , 2005 Share Posted 26 November , 2005 I based my guess on a google for 'mutiny 1922 chinese japanese' .... it threw up the US Marines bit!! Totally unscientific! Reckon Mr. Betts has a better track on it than me!!
