Guest carolinerosstaylor Posted 23 November , 2005 Share Posted 23 November , 2005 I was wondering if anyone could give me any info about the 53rd Bn. of the Gordon Highlanders? All I know is that they were formed in Tillicoultry in 1917, but I can't find out where they fought. My grandad served with them and on the back of a photo of him in uniform it's written '66 W. Lines' after his name. What does this mean? Hope someone can help! Caroline
Steven Broomfield Posted 23 November , 2005 Share Posted 23 November , 2005 Hi, Caroline, and welcome. The 53rd Gordons didn't fight anywhere (except possibly in barracks ) - they were a young soldier battalion, formed on 27th October, '17, from the 42nd Training Reserve Battalion, which had formally been the 11th Gordons. They spent the rest of the war at Tillicoultry. YS battalions took in recruits at 18 years and one month for basic training. No idea what 66 W Lines means, unless the Lines refers to his accommodation - tents, for example, were often referred to as 'lines' - it's a militray term which I couldn't hope to explain. Hope this starts you off - enjoy the search. Regards, Steven

The Gordon Highlanders Museum , Viewfield Road , Aberdeen. 01224 311200. They also have a website. www.gordonhighlanders.com. I think you will find them very helpful.
