J T Gray Posted 25 November , 2007 Share Posted 25 November , 2007 I've just seen a better print of this picture (one wonders how some were produced from the negatives - by the quality, underwater by candelight!) in Cambrai Hotel de Ville, and they also identified it as the 1st Leicesters. It is apparently the Hindenburg Support Line, captured by the 11th Essex that morning, and the trenches are so shallow because the Germans refused to believe that anyone could cross the main Hindenburg line and get that far. Seems plausible to me. Adrian
trenchtrotter Posted 26 November , 2007 Share Posted 26 November , 2007 I have an officers service cap that belonged to 2nd Lieut. Purdy, 1st Leics who was KIA 20/11/17 at Ribecourt. The 1st Leics lost relatively few men that day. 1 officer and about 8 men I think. Purdy was with B Coy. The photo you posted here was taken on 20/11 but I have seen it captioned as the 11 th Batt before. There is also a photo of the 1st Leics by a stranded tank on the 20th. If anyone has an image of Purdy or more of the Leices on the 20th I would love to see them. Thanks TT

Likewise the 11th Essex, and any of tanks H21-32! There are a couple in Horsfall and Cave, but that's it. Adrian
