Guest PO1 Bernard Posted 23 November , 2005 Share Posted 23 November , 2005 The equivalency of a PO1 to an Army rank depends on the country in question. A PO2 in Commonwealth countries is typically a Sergeant, but a PO1 is a Warrant Officer.
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 24 November , 2005 Share Posted 24 November , 2005 Equivalency is always rough and ready, for a start there was no army equivalent to Able Seaman. When PO Mechanics RNAS transferred to the RAF, they were graded as sergeants. The Royal Navy had abolished PO1 and 2 just before the war started, leaving basically PO and CPO. Going by the book, a PO was not the equivalent of a Warrant Officer, because they did not hold a warrant. The Navy had its own warrant ranks, such as Gunner and Commissioned Gunner. joseph Posted 24 November , 2005 Share Posted 24 November , 2005 "Equivalency is always rough and ready" Its an absolute science to,.. the day,.. of Advancement, Appointment, Rating or Promotion. Every person had to know where he stood in the rank structure this was numbered... No 1 being Admiral of the Fleet / Field marshal To give you a flavour of Equivalence, No 13, Gunners, Boatswains, Signal Boatswains, Warrant Telegraphist, Chief Master At Arms, Artificer Engineers, Warrant Mechanicians, Warrant Writers, Head Stewards, Instructors in Cookery, Head Schoolmaster, Carpenters, Warrant Electricians, Warrant Armourers. Equivalent to. 1st Class Staff Sergeant Majors, Army Service Corps Conductors,Army Ordnance Corps Master Gunners 1st Class, 1st Class Staff Sergeant Majors, Army Pay Corps; Army Schoolmasters; but junior to the above ranks. Your man is 16, 17, or 18 depending on who advanced or promoted him. Bit long winded but hope it helps Charles
