curranl Posted 22 November , 2005 Share Posted 22 November , 2005 Hello Binks, There is no mention of your man in Ireland's Memorial Records either. The MIC would normally tell you if he was Killed in Action. There is normally a note added to the MIC- "K in A" or something similar. It looks like he survived the war. To determine for definite which battalion he served with you would need to look up the Medal Rolls in Kew (or get some decent soul to do it for you - try posting a request in the "I'm going to the NA" section.") If you have the "Date of Entry" into Theatre of War from the MIC you can probably get the battalion - simply match that date with the date given for the Royal Irish Rifles battalions disembarkation dates given in the Infantry Battalions details on the main website. Welcome to the Forum, by the way Regards, Liam.
Stebie9173 Posted 22 November , 2005 Share Posted 22 November , 2005 The date that he went to France would suggest that he went overseas as a replacement draft for either the 1st or 2nd Battalion, who were the only Battalions of the Royal Irish Rifles overseas at the time. While the 1- Prefix would suggest that he would have been in the 1st battalion, it could be that he was a Reservist that was late being recalled for some reason (sickness, etc.) If you follow the Division links on this page it will give you an idea of the possible battles at which he may have been present. http://www.1914-1918.net/ririfles.htm Also, if he stayed within the Royal Irish Rifles, his number would have remained the same, so at the moment there is nothing to preclude him being in any of the battalions at a later date... curranl Posted 22 November , 2005 Share Posted 22 November , 2005 Hello All, I forgot he might have gone as a draft, rather than as part of a battalion; that's blown the date of entry idea then! Looks like it's back to Kew. Regards, Liam.

The numbers on the back relate to Edward. Binks
