egbert Posted 28 November , 2005 Share Posted 28 November , 2005 We have to see it in the full context. Like Malte mentioned, as it is posted now, it should be the surname "Ruesse", has nothing to do with German word "Russland" for Russia

egbert Posted 28 November , 2005 Share Posted 28 November , 2005 pic 2/2: the inscription in the wall is a rhyme which i cannot translate as a rhyme, but only the sense: Out there, the world may be in uproar, here inside, will be peace!
StAubyns Posted 28 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 28 November , 2005 Thanks for keeping up with the translations egbert, I think they are essential. You wont be too busy though, for the near future at least. Many thanks Geoff Going back to the first album, anyone any thoughts as to which of the officers of the 22nd might have assembled the album? Malte Znaniecki Posted 1 December , 2005 Share Posted 1 December , 2005 Now, here we got the list of Reserve-Officers (Feldart.Regt. 22) from Ehrenrangliste 1914, the book Bob mentioned to be a good source too. He was absolutely right. Here it is: Malte

bob lembke Posted 3 December , 2005 Share Posted 3 December , 2005 To split hairs, the scan of the reserve officers of the FAR 22 that Malte most usefully posted is from the Rangliste 1914 (Rank List 1914), which was the last of the customary Ranglisten published annually for the Prussian and Wuerttemburg Armies combined. The most useful Rangliste for the study of WW I was the Ehrenrangliste 1914-1918 (Rank List of Honor 1914-1918), published in 1926 by the officers' association. The latter is the only Rangliste with the prefix Ehren. Bob Lembke
StAubyns Posted 3 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 3 December , 2005 ckbeans, thanks for the encoragement, I feel as if I need it at the moment. There are some names further on in the album, for example, what looks like Jocherty or Jacherty, but because of the script and the way they are written I cannot decipher them. The only other I can read, is of course a Lt Schmidt! Page 7 Photo 1 Page 7 Photo 2 Not a face from the previous album Geoff

bob lembke Posted 3 December , 2005 Share Posted 3 December , 2005 The rifle held in the frame is interesting. I imagine that it is for accurately firing rifle grenades. A rifle cartridge itself would throw a ball round 2-3 miles at that elevation. It probably was aimed at something "of value", a trench junction, an officers' loo, or whatever. With such a rig one could fire a few ranging grenades ant then later in an action one could fairly accurately drop grenades on it.
