egbert Posted 15 January , 2006 Share Posted 15 January , 2006 24/1: I see the cut off script bottom right. Is that the proof, that the pictures formerly were glued to another album and later were put into this album. Is the murder out why Eastern Front and Western Front photos are mixed? StAubyns Posted 15 January , 2006 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2006 Christina thanks for your comments, all this additional information is really appreciated. egbert I have seen what you have seen. I cant explain it. This part of the album, when you have it in your hands, as I do now, its really strange how it is made up. Up to page 20, the photographs are laid out carefully, even though the are mixed up East & West, and they are of a uniform size, if you understand what I mean. from Page 21, a different hand has fastened the photos in the album and the photographs are on different paper and of varying sizes. However , they are stuck directly onto the pages of the album unlike the 1st album when they had obviously been cut from another album. From page 25, it changes again. Its as if three people have compiled the album Hope this makes sense Geoff

gcwilson Posted 16 January , 2006 Share Posted 16 January , 2006 Egbert (and others) this new information is quite revealing. Just a few things: The identification of Flabas in the Verdun sector seems secure - the image at A2 P23 P1o is therefore inscribed ‘Flabas Verdun Aug Sept 17’. The movements list for FAR 67 however indicate that the regiment was located in Galicia from August to December 1917 (that’s if I’m reading the post correctly). If this is the case does this suggest that the author of the album transferred from FAR 67 to another regiment between autumn 1916 and August 1917 – or is there a problem (as has been suggested) with the date? I’ve attached an un-dated view of Flabas. In regard to the Verdun sector there’s a German language site here (Flabas is mentioned in the diary of Lt Müller in the FRONTALLTAG section): http://www.geocities.com/bunker1914/verdun.htm In regard to Jachery/Jochery/Ischery/Tscherdy – I’m not convinced with the reading of this as Ischery. The captions to P23 P6o and P23 P7o both have examples of ‘I’ and ‘T’ – there are subtle differences but enough to indicate that the Jachery/Jochery captions begin with ‘T’. I’m attempting to determine if such a place exists in Silesia (I have a suspicion that there was a mis-type in the single reference to this place in the source site). I’m also looking at a place close to Naroch’/Narach’ in the Belarus sector and am testing a number of conversions from German orthography (and therefore pronunciation) into Russian and Byelorussian to see if it fits. ian turner Posted 16 January , 2006 Share Posted 16 January , 2006 Christina - Flabas photo I think that the items on the ridge are in fact blemishes on the photo, and not buildings or structures. Ian
StAubyns Posted 16 January , 2006 Author Share Posted 16 January , 2006 Ian, you are exactly right. The pictures actual size is only 2" x !" and I have just looked through a magnifying glass. When the album is closed it comes into contact with photo 24/2 and at some time they have partially stuck together! You can see the missing bits on the top of 24/2. Well spotted. Malte Znaniecki Posted 16 January , 2006 Share Posted 16 January , 2006 Hello, the place is not "Jachery". The place is ISCHERY, today in Poland. I think in former Silesia. Possibly at HIRSCHBERG. On GOOGLE I only found one place to search: http://list.genealogy.net/mailman/archiv/s...2/msg00146.html Malte Sorry I failed. The Name (also existing as family name) is TSCHEDY other point: The lake is called "Oz Narocz" by the Polish and Russian speaking people, "Narotsch-See" by the Germans (= Narotch lake) Malte

ckbeans Posted 16 January , 2006 Share Posted 16 January , 2006 Hello Malte, Geoff, Egbert et al So Tschedy could have been the person and not the place - is there any way we could pursue this? Sorry I have no answers, only questions. Thank you ckbeans
Christina Holstein Posted 16 January , 2006 Share Posted 16 January , 2006 Yes, you are probably right, Graham, I think the undated photo of Flabas is taken from the same place - roughly speaking - as the '1917' photo. The chapel is visible in the same place. That is where it stands today (rebuilt, of course). Christina

egbert Posted 16 January , 2006 Share Posted 16 January , 2006 Graham could you please post the Flabas pic in higher resolution or email it for comparison ? Page 23: I see the lower 3 pics to the right are cut out from somewhere else and inserted here. Tschedy most likely is a location that is written differently today. ckbeans Posted 17 January , 2006 Share Posted 17 January , 2006 Another piece of the jigsaw. The movement of these divisions around St Quentin is of particular interest - thanks for the detail Malte. Can anyone identify 24 - 4? ckbeans
egbert Posted 17 January , 2006 Share Posted 17 January , 2006 The word in brackets is "Belgien"=Belgium, but the location name is total socks; its a mixture German/French and makes no sense; neither Obermaire nor Obenmaire is a hit! Though it looks like a mairie=town hall
Cnock Posted 17 January , 2006 Share Posted 17 January , 2006 Hello, In the county of East-Flanders there is a community called Overmeire-Donk. maybe this one? Regards, Cnock
gcwilson Posted 17 January , 2006 Share Posted 17 January , 2006 Geoff, Thanks for more great images - again a mix of East and West. Just a general observation - the borders on the uncropped prints themselves seem to fall into distinctive groups - those from the Western Front are all white while those from the East are black - haven't tested the theory for all yet. There's some really good co-operative work going on in this thread and I'm learning really interesting things about theatres of the War that I was previously ignorant of. The other value of things like these albums is their very personal nature and the insights they bring into the lives of both the album owners and their subjects. Keep them coming, Graham W. egbert Posted 17 January , 2006 Share Posted 17 January , 2006 Hello, In the county of East-Flanders there is a community called Overmeire-Donk. maybe this one? Regards, Cnock Cnock, I say that's it than. Nevertheless, could you check whether some 90 years ago "Overmeire" was slightly differently written/spelled? gcwilson Posted 18 January , 2006 Share Posted 18 January , 2006 The coloured border theory only works after page 21 of Album 2. Egbert - I'm having a few problems trying to upload a detail of the Flabas photo - don't know if its just me or something systemic. I'll try again later Graham
